Program

Diane Moresi introduced today’s speaker Ken White, a friend of hers since junior high in Modesto.  Baseball and books are today’s subject. Major League baseball is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and all teams will be wearing a commemorative patch. Ken talked about the Modesto Red Caps, formed in1872 who once played an exhibition game with the visiting Chicago White Sox. Barnstorming teams would sometimes visit, including stars such as Babe Ruth. The Modesto team has been a minor league affiliate for a number of MLB teams. They currently are affiliated with the Seattle Mariners.

Ken then pivoted to talk about the ’62 World Series between the Giants and Yankees. During a rain delay, both teams came over to Modesto to work out between delayed WS games. The stadium in Modesto was the backdrop for Ken’s book “Getaway Day”. Ken showed photos from the Modesto workouts. Included were 8 future Hall of Famers, among them Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Juan Marichal and Yogi Berra. Ken then read an excerpt of his book describing opening day in Cincinnati, where the traditional opener was held until recent years.

Ken shared other books he has written and described a children’s book he is currently writing. Ken also described a stage play based on the iconic dust bowl photo of the migrant mother. Finally, Ken shared a sequel to Getaway Day called Beautiful Day that is set in 1969 and based on music of the era. Ken’s presentation was a fun and informative look at baseball and its impact on him and his hometown of Modesto.
