Visiting Rotarians

None present

Guests

Laurie Myers

Sunshine

Ginny Cannon brought a sympathy card for Yale Abram’s wife for us to sign. To Cathy’s knowledge no date has been set for a memorial service. Debi Zaft visited Jack and Priscilla Abercrombie. They are now housebound, having sold their cars. Please keep them in mind – they may need help with local shopping or doctors trips and as well our friendship. If someone wants to give Jack a ride to Rotary for a periodic visit, he may welcome that opportunity.

Raffle

Vicki Hardcastle had $22 in the kitty, but Bill Hatcher did not choose the correct marble.

Joke Time

Dan Shell told another Jewish joke, well, it was like a joke, but without the humor. Probably for the best……

Announcements

Ray Giampaoli is already  cheerleading for Giro Bello sponsorships for our 10th annual ride. He’s looking for a marketing director.

Andrea Geary announced Sept. 7th is the bocce tournament. We now have 5 teams! SR West has 2 teams, Sebastopol has 4 teams. VOM has a team and SR East may have a team. Volunteers are needed.

Doug Johnson shared new information about the paella party on Sept. 21st. Prospective members will be admitted free.

Kathy Schwartz asked as Social chair for club members to fill out the pink questionnaire on the tables.

Rick Allen shared tomorrow’s fundraiser for telemedicine at Paradise Ridge Winery. $20 gets you in.

Cathy’s Announcements

October 2nd we will meet at Legends at Bennett Valley Golf Course. Cathy requested club members give her ideas for other prospective meeting sites for our club. The Flaming O will be embarking on a major remodeling beginning this winter and will be unavailable for our club. This is a good time to look for a more desirable alternative with (hopefully) a better menu or at least more creative ways to torcher chicken.

Program

Holly Garretson introduced John Pavik of Catholic Charities. John gave an overview of Catholic Charities and it’s mission as a 501 C3 organization based in Santa Rosa and serving several North Bay counties. John described Catholic Charities as a Catholic based organization that also includes members of other denomonations, including Protestants. There are 187 employees at Catholic Charities as well as 1,200 volunteers. John shared the 7 Catholic social teachings which guide the organization in it’s mission.

Catholic Charities has 3 primary points of emphasis. They are: care and advocacy of seniors, counseling and programs to help immigrants, legal and otherwise and challenging poverty. For seniors, volunteers and paid staff work call centers and visit seniors to help them stay in their homes a little longer as they age.

Case workers work with immigrants to help immigrants on a path to citizenship as well as helping those here undocumented.

Catholic Charities works with the poor and homeless to find shelter. They have helped many low income people who lost their homes in the 2017 fire find new homes or shelter. Catholic Charities helps to make sure those living in shelters are adequately fed.

Homeless and housing solutions is a major area of emphasis for CC. Teams of volunteers go into the community to find homeless people and help them to find shelter. John described the Nightingale program for those recovering from a medical procedure or illness. Nightingale connects homeless people who people recovering from surgery with a temporary respite bed, then permanent housing. John described other programs and sites where the homeless are helped and/or housed. Funding comes from grants as well as other private donations and collaborations such as Burbank Housing.

Looking ahead, John shared an artist’s rendering of the new temporary housing as well as permanent low-income housing project that they hope to begin construction on by next year.  The project will be located at Ninth and Morgan Street in Central Santa Rosa. The project is a joint project between Catholic Charities and Burbank Housing and will be a welcome step toward resolving the homeless issue faced in Santa Rosa.
