Our Program For January 3, 2018

The Power of Rotary -From Devastation Comes Inspiration

Jennifer Strong, Rotary Club of Lakeport

There is a difference between being a Rotarian and understanding why you are a Rotarian. What was the moment when you found the WHY and realized the power that comes in that little logo? Maybe you haven’t had it yet? In this program, you will follow one long time Rotarian’s journey on the path of experiencing that moment of “why’ and the realization that this organization called Rotary is an incredibly powerful entity that carries with it the ability to take one small idea and turn it into a snowball. You will hear Jennifer’s story about the fires that raged through Lake County in the summer of 2015 and how her idea to start a Rotary Fire Relief Fund changed not only the lives of a community, but also the life of one very ordinary Rotarian. This same District 5130 fund continues to help victims of the fires of October 9th in our own Santa Rosa and the North Bay community.

Always in life bad times will lead to great times. ~ M. Night Shyamalan

Unless you have bad times, you can’t appreciate the good times. ~ Joe Torre

The good life is the best preparation for bad times. ~ Neal A. Maxwell

Good times become good memories and bad times become good lessons in life. ~ Anurag Prakash Ray

2017 has been quite the year. Looking back on it makes me want to say good ridden. Our life will never be the same and yet we are making it about a lifestyle never being the same versus our life. Yet so many lost so much that it’s like a quicksand sucking you into a never-ending nightmare. Not just those that lost their belongings but those that their hearts got ripped out by pain and personal loss of loved ones.

Yes, it’s been a horrific year. But it is about the bad times making us stronger and appreciating the good times. We have all had wonderful times that are cherished in our memories forever. We’ve laughed, loved, and created new friends. I’ve met new friends through devastation that I might never have met before.

So now we are passing into 2018. For the Chinese, it is the year of the Dog which symbolizes A New Start. How appropriate. So let’s pull up our britches and put on a new shirt. It’s a new year with new adventures. Were all stronger and more compassionate for our fellow man and woman. Let’s carry that forward and make that compassion permanent.

My grandpa told me to remember two things in life. Look out for Number One, and remember your number. –Orville Cogswell

“Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting the bull not to charge because you are a vegetarian.” –Dennis Wholey
