Our Program for December 14:

LISTENING FOR A CHANGE
Phyliss Rosenfield

Phyllis Rosenfield

Phyllis Rosenfield

Phyllis Rosenfield is the founder and Executive Director/President of Listening for a Change whose Mission is to promote understanding and acceptance of human diversity through education, oral history, and the arts.

Growing up in the segregated South, Phyllis experienced the damaging effects of segregation.  She also lost family in the Shoah/Holocaust.  These experiences helped form her desire to work toward acceptance, understanding, and justice for all people.

A teacher by profession, with a Masters in Equity & Social Justice, Phyllis was the co-creator in 1991 of the Sonoma County Survivor Project. Lessons learned from this endeavor led to the concept of dispelling otherness. All Listening for a Change school, community, and business programs are built on this foundation.

In her own words – We simply don’t have enough opportunities in life to bridge misunderstanding, honor another person’s story, and come to a deeper understanding and acceptance of other people.  Helping create these opportunities is the work of Listening for a Change.

Please join us on December 14th for this powerful presentation.

Christina Zieminski, Classical Harpist delighted us with holiday classics

Today, we had three guests:  Sally Fletcher, Richard McChinak and Jean-Ravel Dubois.  Welcome guests!

SUNSHINE

Ginny Cannon announced that over a week ago Robert Pierce’s daughter Valerie had a bad car accident hitting a pole and suffering serious injuries and a concussion. Fortunately, Robert said that Valerie is doing much better and is expected over time to fully recover. Valerie lives in Park City, Utah, not far from Kim Murphy’s daughter, Kacie.  Our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery are with Robert and Kim and their families.

BIRTHDAYS

img_2684Kim Murphy shared with us the experience her family is currently going through with the stroke her 30 year old daughter had in Utah. Family members are taking turns taking care of her during her recovery. Kim went into some detail about how the stroke came about and the high quality treatment she has received.

Afterward, Kim recognized all those Rotarians with December birthdays and gave each a gift bag full of celebratory goodies.

CATHY’S JOKE

Cathy shared another groaner with the crowd, today.

RAFFLE

img_2681img_2682Cathy Vicini was in a generous mood, giving raffle tickets to everyone who didn’t have any. Mikki Cardoza announced that $85.00 was in today’s pot. Cecil Humes had his number called but failed to find the winning marble. Cathy then called another number awarding the winner a nice bottle of Ripple. (Sorry Cathy, I couldn’t resist!)  🙂

EL PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATIONS

President Jose announced that Craig Meltzner has had to take a leave of absence from the club due to business reasons.

He also reminded us of the challenge to reach our $2,000 fundraising goal for Polio Plus.  He suggested hosting meals with friends and asking them to donate to Polio Plus.

To that end, he auctioned a freshly cut Christmas tree donated by our very own Sergeant at Arms Intern, Los Baron, netting us $50.  Los even helped loading the tree for winning bidder, Keven Brown.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Ted Wilmsen put out the call for volunteers to fill out the remaining spots for dictionary distribution to local 3rd grade schools.
  • Elizabeth Karbousky reminded us about the social being hosted by Keven Brown at Corrick’s on Thursday, the 8th from 6-8pm. Bring wine to share. Keven is also offering 20% off of merchandise during the social. (see below for pictures of the social.)
  • Steve Marburger is heading up this year’s Christmas Nutcracker program for under privileged children and in the process of asking for donations took the time to recognize Tim Fawcett who is celebrating his 20th season impersonating Santa Claus. Fortunately he’s impersonating “Good Santa” as opposed to the Billy Bob Thornton’s “Bad Santa”.
  • dscn2257

Jack Abercrombie and Yale Abrams on the first day of our new check in process!

Matt Fannin explained the change in our usual lunch ticket, sign in routine. By having Rotarians check in and get their badges outside, Red Badgers who work as greeters can see the names of members as they greet them at the door. This makes it more comfortable for everyone.

RECOGNITIONS

  • El Presidente recognized  Nicole Le for sending Uber to the airport in Oakland rather than driving there herself to pick up her husband. Uber goes by the name of Dan Borenstein.  For this, Nicole donated $50 to the club and $50 to her Paul Harris.
  • Next, El Presidente turned his attention to Elizabeth Karbousky who was pictured holding her child on a sunny beach in Kauai. $50 to the club!
  • Kathleen Archer was shown as a four fisted drinker. She exclaimed, “Line ‘em up and I’ll knock ‘em down!” Actually she was posing with a table full of mixed drinks somewhere also in Kauai. Kathleen tried to bribe El Presidente with Kona Coffee, but still paid $50 to Polio Plus.
  • John Poremba was recognized for his trip to New Jersey and New York. He donated $100 to the Foundation for the Veterans scholarship program.
  • Carolyn Fassi checked one off of Jose’s bucket list by travelling to Chile. She also tried to bribe El Presidente, but still donated $100 to the polio fund.
  • Finally, El Presidente awarded Doug Chase Rotarian of the Month for November for developing a cool digital repository of records for the Foundation. He used “TheBrain” to create this program.

PROGRAM

img_2686img_2685Alan Silow, Executive Director of the Santa Rosa Symphony was today’s speaker. Mr. Silow shared information about the search for a new conductor to replace outgoing conductor Bruno Ferrandis.  He explained that since moving into the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University, the symphony has been elevated in status which shows in the high quality of candidates for Music Conductor. The Santa Rosa Symphony now is the third highest funded symphony in the state following only San Francisco and Los Angeles.  Mr. Silow also noted that in its long history, the Santa Rosa Symphony has only had four conductors.

The upcoming symphony season will be exciting as the 5 finalists, each with an impressive resume will have a chance to conduct the Santa Rosa Symphony. A video with interviews with each candidate was shown and Mr. Silow shared some insight to the selection process which will include input from symphony members and the public as well. The process will be exciting to watch and judging from the talent and passion displayed by the candidates in the video, the Santa Rosa Symphony will have an impressive replacement for Bruno.
