Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch took office in January 2011. She began her career working in the Alameda County District Attorney’s office after graduating from the University of San Francisco Law School in 1987.
Ms. Ravitch moved north and joined the Sonoma County DA’s office in 1990. During her fifteen years there, Ms. Ravitch handled cases that ranged from driving under the influence to special circumstance murder trials.
Upon leaving the DA’s office in 2004, Ms. Ravitch spent three years in private practice before accepting a position as Chief Deputy District Attorney in Mendocino County where she continued to handle high profile violent crimes cases and supervised a staff of attorneys. Since taking office, Ms. Ravitch won a first degree murder conviction in a case where the defendant shot his sister’s boyfriend.
Jill Ravitch is the first woman to hold the post of District Attorney in Sonoma County, and one of only eleven women elected as DA in this state. Ms. Ravitch is also a professor of law at Empire College Law School where she teaches Criminal Law to first year students.
