Our Program for February 24th:

“THE PEANUTS MOVIE”
A LABOR OF LOVE

The Peanuts Movie-posterThe Rotary Club of Santa Rosa is fortunate to have Craig Schulz return to our speaker podium on February 24th. He will give us the fascinating story of how an idea he had over 10 years ago to write and produce another Peanuts TV Special evolved into a full screen movie and of all the many people involved to make it happen, including his son Bryan. Craig will give examples of the meticulous detail he insisted upon to meet the standards of the beloved strip’s creator.   The final result is truly a beautiful and touching tribute from a son to his father.

The Peanuts Movie has been nominated for Best Animated Feature by the Screen Actors Guild and by the Annies, nominated for Best Producer by the PGA, and has recently won the award for Best Family Film from Movieguide.  Even if you have already seen the film, you will want to see it again after hearing Craig’s story.

Craig has generously offered to bring a signed commemorative Dream Big poster for auction.  Proceeds will go towards our charitable projects, so bid high!

February 24th is Bring a Friend Day at Rotary.  Let’s pack the House!

VISITOR DAY

Very important!  Next week is Visitor Day Craig Schulz is our guest speaker.  Please bring a guest and let Jack Abercrombie know so we have a good count for the Flamingo Hotel.

Today’s meeting was our annual Student Recognition Awards for excellence in our city’s high schools.  As usual, those we recognize today put this bulletin writer to shame.  Their accomplishments in high school are so far above what I did in 1973!  All I had to do is get a B average to get into UC Irvine.  Here are the nine students that we honored today:

Alejandro Torres from Roseland University Prep with Sean Kerr

Eduardo Torres Davila from Montgomery High School with Laurie Fong

Luz Loza Hernandez from Elsie Allen High School with Mary Gail Stablein

Madison Paige Haase from Piner High School with Tim Zalamudo

Claire Knight from Maria Carrillo High School with Vick Zands

Roisin Lafferty from Cardinal Newman High School, with Graham Rutherford

Samuele Esperon form Santa Rosa High School with Brad Coscarelli

Tom Reinacher from Rincon Valley Christian School with Marci Guevara

Yadhira Yanez from Ridgway High School with Heather Hagele

What can I say about these kids and their accomplishments?  Luz wants to run for state senate someday.  She is also a participant in our NewGen Peace Builders!  Alejandro is going to one of the UC campuses for college.  Claire is both a ballerina and a car mechanic!   Sam has developed an algorithm to correlate drop outs and crime.  Eduardo can do circles around us in math.  Roisin is from Ireland and will be going back there for college.  Tom is a future CFO, but says physics is his field of study.  Yadhira is already a hard working mom with a supportive family.  Madison is a born peacemaker…why isn’t she should be in the NewGen program!

So if you missed today’s program you have missed out on meeting the future (and it is looking so bright I think I need shades).

Other happenings at today’s meeting:

No one to report in the sunshine report today…Good!

No visiting Rotarians but we did have two visitors besides our students, teachers, administrators, their friends and family; Shirley Verne and Deborah Meyers

Raffle pot was up to $65.  Karen Ball’s number was called, but she did not win.

Please make sure your information is up-to-date on the Rotary.org website.  President Doug says only 35 members of our club have completed their profile (this is in addition to the dacdb website)

Giro Bello News:

Giro Bello posters are now available.  Pick some up and put them up in your office and take them any place you can think of that will help us boost ridership.

Also, for all riders that sign up for the Giro Bello between now and March 17th will be invited to a free dinner/party at Franchettis’ on the Friday night before the Giro Bello.  So spread the news!  It is on the Giro Bello Facebook page so please copy it to your own Facebook page.

Polio Plus Fundraisers:

There are 3 events in March to help the club reach its Polio Plus Contribution for this year:

March 5thTony Roehrick will be cooking a gourmet dinner (he is looking for a location that is big enough to have as many as 10 people in the kitchen at once).  The price to attend this dinner is $50.

March 12thCasey D’Angelo is doing a dinner at his home.  Likewise the price is $50.

March 20th:  Now for something completely different….Layne Bowen is hosting whiskey and cigars at his home.  The cost is $20 for this event.

Recognitions:

Lena Humber wanted to brag about her grandkids and her Danish heritage and was willing to pay for it!

Steve Marburger got caught with a ringing phone but also let us know that the tumor in his wife’s jaw has been treated and is just fine

Karen Ball is celebrating her 35th wedding anniversary and first grandchild

Cecil Humes has a granddaughter going to Bangkok Thailand as a Rotary Exchange Student next fall.

Jeanne Levin is celebrating her birthday and she asked Fred Levin to pay for the recognition….he did.

Rich de Lambert was on a vacation to Mexico but he is really proud of his fire fighter son who will be teaching fire protection in Peru, plus also going to Guatemala

Diane Moresi just put on a big party for her mom’s 95th birthday party

Doug Chase let us know that our famous Rotary dentists; Nicole Le, Dan Bornstein, Jack Tolin, Frank Hodges, Chuck Wear, and himself will each be donating $100 to the Giro Bello and encouraged other like occupations to come together and do the same.

Emily Harrington was just up to Tahoe to celebrate her husband and son’s birthdays and made a donation to the Giro Bello.

And that is it for this week.   Sincerely, Kris Anderson.
