THE PROGRAM:

Peter Marincovich from Audiology Associates on Hearing and Hearing Loss

Guest Speaker Dr. Marincovich

Guest Speaker Dr. Marincovich

Appropriately there was an article in the Press Democrat today that says 25% of adults have some hearing loss.  Dr. Marincovich believes that restoring hearing restores lives.  Why, because people tend to isolate themselves when their hearing gets bad.  So he aims to diagnose the problem, rehabilitate the person and help prevent further loss.

He has trademarked a method of evaluation called Map5 Method.   There are different solutions depending on the problem.  Typically we lose the high pitches when we get older.  The little hairs in our ears get weak.  We hear the vowels, but not the consonants.  Hearing aids today can be fitted for just this problem. It’s like stereos we listened to as kids.  Cranking up the music did not make it better.  The music wasn’t distorted when it was loud.  So the frequency is fixed for clarity.  Sounds above 85dB’s are considered harmful.  That would be the equivalent of 8 hours on your cell phone.  Babies can be checked for hearing.  Balance and tinnitus can be caused by a lot of things.  Ringing is the brain’s way of telling you something is wrong in the ear.  Balance is important to prevent falls.  This can be an inner ear problem.  Not addressing hearing loss is associated with stress and memory issues.  Social isolation is often due to hearing loss and cognitive decline in older adults.  Dr. Marincovich teaches classes in communication.  Speak slower and maintain eye contact when having a conversation.  Ask questions to make sure your audience did hear you correctly.  Medicaid covers 80% of the testing for hears loss, but does not pay for the solutions.
