Next Wednesday is Past President’s Day at our Rotary Club, the opportunity to say hello and thank them for their years of preparation to become president of this remarkable group of Rotarians. OPENING CEREMONIES

Carmen Sinigiani gives the invocation

The Pledge of Allegiance was led today by special guest, Joan Rousseau, wife of William Rousseau, short term Rotary President. Bill called on Carmen Sinigiani for today’s invocation. In honor of the Third Annual Giro Bello cycling event coming up on July 6^th Carmen shared some hard-found quotes about biking, notably one from the late great writer and author, Ernest Hemingway. We tried to catch Carmen and capture her Hemingway script notes for The Santa Rosarian and club archives but, like the star athlete that she is, she was already out the door and travelin’ west on 4^th Street.

VISITING ROTARIANS

Three visiting Rotarians today included two local financial advisors—Joe Sobelewski from Healdsburg Rotary and Scott Holder from the Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary. And Rotarian Arlaine Cervantes, who proudly presented President Bill with the club banner from her home club, the Lake Atitlan Rotary Club in Guatemala, Mexico, and received our club’s banner in return.

Joan Rousseau was introduced by Bill Rousseau, the soon-to-be debunked and almost-past-president. A Red Badger still, Ann Gospe introduced her guest Steve Jung, from the Doubletree Hotel in Rohnert Park. Vikki Bufano, from Hired Hands Home Care in Santa Rosa, was the guest of Doug Johnson and Jack Abercrombie. We welcomed back mortgage broker Carolyn Ivancovich. Jock McNeill introduced his wife Laura McNeill, and Jason Black was back for his third visit to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa as the guest of Carmen Sinigiani. Welcome, to all our guests.

SUNSHINE REPORT

Penny Tibbetts cheerfully announced that the sun was shining and the skies were clear for this week’s forecast.

ROTARY MAGAZINE QUIZ

Rotary Quizmaster Debi Zaft asked the final Rotary magazine question for this Rotary year and, not surprisingly Past President Steve Olson was the first with the correct answer, giving him three answers in this year’s annual Rotary magazine sweepstakes. Steve is scheduled to compete in the final drawing for the $100 grand prize.

RAFFLE

The omens were not favorable on this day for the nervous ticket holders of all those red tickets. First, one of the perky hostesses failed to appear on schedule. Raffle Czar Nick Knickerbocker sprang into action and sprinted across the room in time to hold the Velvet bag for Blaine Goodwin. In spite of the improving odds and a growing jackpot up to $169, Blaine Goodwin grasped his “lucky” ticket, reached into the bag containing 49 playing cards and two jokers, and withdrew (pause for suspense to build) another queen—the Queen of Spades this week. Blaine was quietly philosophical as he clutched his $10 consolation prize on his way back to the strangely-subdued and so-called “Rowdy Table”.

GIRO BELLO VOLUNTEERS

Doug Johnson stopped off at today’s Rotary meeting on his way to the Rotary International Convention in Lisbon, Portugal. Doug wanted to be sure that every one of us would be working for Giro Bello, barely three weeks from now on July 6^th. Past President Don McMillan remains in charge of securing volunteers to help with set-up & registration on Friday evening, July 5^th and Saturday morning, July 6^th, at the O’Reilly Media Park in Sebastopol. Don is standing by, waiting to take your call, or email, so volunteer, pitch in, and help make the third Giro Bello another success. By the way, when questioned about his week in Costa Rica, Doug swears that he had to attend the Discovery Office System’s business meeting in Central America.

CLUB ROSTER UPDATES

Club Secretary Jack Abercrombie reminded all of us again to check our listings in the annual hard copy of the Roster. The new roster for the next Rotary year—July 1, 2013-14—will go to press this month. Jack suggests you check the old roster for any changes in your email address, business and home addresses, and date of birth. Contact Jack immediately to keep your contact information up to date.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Past President Marnie Goldschlag reminded us that the annual Past President’s Day Luncheon will be next Wednesday at noon in the Flamingo Ballroom. Most of the past presidents plan to attend this once-a-year meeting in their honor, with only two still undecided as of Friday. This year we will test club members on how well they really know some of our more outgoing Presidents of the Past.

President William made a last-minute announcement that a reception for fellow Rotarian Mike Truesdell would be held that Wednesday evening at Cardinal Newman. Mike has been a member of this Rotary Club since he arrived to become president of the private Catholic school in 2004. Mike announced his resignation a few days ago. He is set to become president of St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy in Toledo, Ohio.

Aging flyboy Tim Delany took the gamble that he could avoid being penalized for promoting and informing us that the big Sonoma County Air Show—Wings Over Wine Country— will be held in mid-August, Saturday & Sunday, August 17 & 18, at the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport. Timmy escaped with a $10 slap on the wrist. Well worth the effort!

RECOGNITIONS

Vickie Hardcastle confessed that she and Judge Allan Hardcastle, her husband, will be returning to their first active duty military assignment long, long ago in the wilds of southern Georgia. On the romantic nostalgia agenda are several MLB contests between the Atlanta Braves and the San Francisco Giants. Without a single prompt she pledged to finish Allan’s Paul Harris Fellowship…whatever it takes.

Tim Delany, back from what sounded like an exceptional vacation to central Europe, dropped destinations like Riva, Latvia, Israel, and the Golan Heights but it wasn’t clear where he traded our club’s Rotary banner for the one he presented to President Bill. But you had to love the casual way he paid $50 each for the club, $50 to our local foundation, and $50 to his Paul Harris Fellowship: Across the board!

Doug Johnson stopped by, changing planes and his shirt on the way to Rotary’s International Convention in Lisbon, after spending a mandatory week in Costa Rica to pick up one of his sales awards from Discovery Office Systems. Doug paid for his travels with another triple-play across the board: $50 each for the club, $50 for the Santa Rosa Rotary Foundation, and $50 for his Paul Harris Fellowship.

When faced with visual proof that he had been vacationing on the Big Island in Hawaii, frolicking among the lava flows, Dr. Dan Bornstein, the club’s absentee dentist, argued his case that President Bill’s photographic color evidence was flawed, and got off cheap with a $50 slap on the wrist.

TRUE CONFESSIONS

Never one to pass up a bargain, Kris Anderson volunteered that she was in Las Vegas for “a mortgage industry conference”. She confirmed that her trip was strictly business, even though she did drop the name of master motivator Tony Robbins. She then dropped $15 into the club’s coffers.

Robert Pierce spoke up to recall his recent Scottsdale/Sedona trip but with no further details, except for $15 that he contributed to the club.

Past President Marnie’s daughter graduated from high school, turned 18, and is off on a Road Trip to “Who Knows Where”. Next stop, University of Nevada in Reno. That will be $20 BUCKS, Marnie.

Another past president, Rich De Lambert, has just returned from a hot and humid visit back east to celebrate one more in a long line of grandsons graduating from high school. Did he say that 30 relatives made the trip?

Jack Abercrombie, who attended his granddaughter’s graduation in Minnesota over the weekend, donated $15 to the club in her honor.

After all this time, Debra Smith finally confirmed the rumors that she and the legendary Marvin Ray Dorfman are getting married in only two weeks. She donated $15 to our Rotary Club Foundation. Worth every penny, right Debra?

This week’s program was put together by President William to give members of the largest and oldest Rotary Club in Sonoma County a broad understanding of all that we have accomplished since this Rotary year began on July 1, 2012. FUNDRAISING

Virtually everything that the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa does for the local communities we serve: The club’s devotion to scholarships, young people & education, world community service, grants and joint projects, and even the business of being a Rotary Club, depends on our success in fundraising. This past year the Giro Bello cycling event generated about $50,000. The extravagant public event, Casino Royale added another $18,000 to club coffers. Much of the club’s membership support goes into those funds. Member contributions to their individual Paul Harris Fellowships total almost $10,000 a year to be divided between Rotary International, the district, and local Rotary activities. Almost every dollar that is generated goes to so many worthwhile projects, grants, incentives, and worthwhile goals that fundraising seems like a never-ending chore. And it is never-ending: As soon as Rotary allocates those funds to everything we do, we see what else needs to be accomplished by our part of the world’s first service club. In December this year, this Rotary Club marks its 92^nd anniversary of helping others.

SCHOLARSHIPS & EDUCATION

☻ Funds from the new Rotary Club of Santa Rosa Foundation and more than a dozen endowed scholarships combined to award individual $1,500 scholarships to each of ten qualified and deserving students that will enable them to complete their educations at top-quality colleges & universities. Our club foundation also donated $5,000 to the SRJC Scholarship fund.

☻ This May, our club contributed $5,000 toward the SRJC Rotary Student Center for Leadership
naming rights of a room on the SRJC campus. All 18 Rotary Clubs in Sonoma County (every club an offspring of the county’s first Rotary Club) will contribute to support the new Student Leadership Center.

Local support of youth education:

☻ For more than 25 years, every month of each school year, this Rotary Club has individually honored outstanding students from each Santa Rosa High School. Each student is invited to a Rotary Club meeting where they are introduced to the club by their principal and receive the award trophy.

☻ Every winter this Rotary Club participates in a volunteer hands-on project that gives a beautiful dictionary to every third grader in the Santa Rosa School District. Purchased by our Rotary Club, the dictionaries are delivered to the schools by volunteers.

☻ The 2012-13 District Youth Exchange funded student Leah Steiger, outbound to Finland. And student, Wan-Ling “Sophia” Lai, inbound from Taiwan.

☻ “The French Connection” Group Study Exchange Team of six young adults working in diverse careers spent a month visiting with the Rotary Clubs of District 5130 and learning about life & careers in northern coastal California.

☻ Our Rotary Club supported the Healdsburg Rotary Scholar Athletes Awards Program. June 16-21 we participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards given to Margaret Botka and Brandon Sims.

☻ A traditional Christmas party and a spectacular ballet performance of the Nutcracker Suite are calculated to overwhelm the senses of the disadvantaged children who are our first-time guests each new holiday season, but what blows their minds is the personal visit from “Santa Tim” as the most authentic Old St. Nick, with at least three sleighs overloaded with presents, cute and twinkly helpers, and all the cookies and soda pop any hot & overdressed 10 year old could want. Here’s the secret though…the most fun of all is enjoyed by Tim and his Rotary volunteers.

☻ Rotary also supported Interact Clubs from Santa Rosa High School and Cardinal Newman High School Interact’s Roseland Prep Projects.

☻ This Rotary Club has a long history of supporting youth in agriculture through the purchase of livestock products during the Sonoma County Fair. We also took advantage of the unique opportunity— thanks to the Petaluma Little League team’s trip to the national championships—to support the Ugandan Little League Team’s purchases of much-needed baseball equipment.

ROTARY’S PUBLIC SAFETY AWARDS

Mike Clark, 2013 Law enforcement officer of the Year

This will be the 20^th year for Rotary’s annual Safety Awards which were put together in the early 1990’s by an attorney, a retired corporate executive, the owner of a hardware store, a former broadcast journalist, and a retired police detective, fellow members of the Santa Rosa Rotary Club to fulfill Rotary’s commitment to Vocational Service. It’s amazing how ideas become traditions and keep building over time. Rotary’s Safety Awards have become part of the Rotary Club’s public image.

ROTARY FELLOWSHIP & COMMUNITY IMAGE

• Nothing is more “hands-on” than when fellow Rotarians pitch in to work as a team committed to helping others. Like this spring’s Rebuilding Together project at New Directions School on the outskirts of Santa Rosa. It was a long day but when it ended, even the teachers would not recognize the ground and buildings.

• When it’s time for District 5130 leaders to meet, they can always count on the Mother Club’s active members to show up, set-up, participate, and clean up, most recently at the District Conference on the edge of historic Railroad Square in Santa Rosa. Sam McMillan and Ted Wilmsen were part of the Sergeant-at-Arms Committee for the Conference & the Assembly. The attendees from the Santa Rosa clubs were impressed and we are proud of those guys.

• Our own Sergeant-at-Arms Committee is something we can also be proud of. We don’t notice all the work they do before and after the weekly meetings. We would only notice if they didn’t take care of the preparation, set-up, then securing it all after the rest of us leave.

• There’s a lot of that behind the scenes stuff going on. Take the logistics of succession planning. Incoming president Peggy Soberanis started preparing for her presidential year since she took on the responsibility several years ago. Mark Burchill has completed most of his preparations and it won’t be long before the board selects a successor for Jose Guillen, who is not yet the president-elect.

• In fact most of us might be surprised at how much time and energy is required to keep the Rotary machine in operation. Imagine all the emails, phone calls, record-keeping, head counting and planning ahead. Club communications include the daily website, weekly bulletin, even those great socials that Debi puts together require thought & preparation. Fellowship is a vital ingredient for most organizations and Rotary Clubs are no exception.

Linda Sinkay is in insurance and Jim Goodenough is a website designer. As fellow Rotarians they belong to the Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise and both are past presidents of their Rotary Club.

Remember the Rotarians who welcomed you to Rotary this week? Jack Atkin and John Berto were the cheerful guys who greeted you as you entered the ballroom. RAFFLE

Thanks to a four-week streak of bad luck by brave Rotarians named Debra, Yale, Tim, and even Ted, the Raffle Jackpot that was raided by “Lucky” Wilmsen” on May 1^st had grown back to $149. Red Badge member Anne Gospe announced that the velvet bag contained two jokers and 50 losing cards. Steve Reuter’s lucky ticket was drawn, but it was all for naught as he drew the Queen of Diamonds then slunk away with only $10 in consolation cash.

Club Secretary Jack Abercrombie announced that we all should check our individual listings in the club roster that will be printed by the end of June. Biographical listings in the on-line website roster can be changed throughout the Rotary year but printed rosters can be updated and corrected only at the beginning of each Rotary Roster Year—July 1^st. Contact Jack immediately to update your roster listings for 2013-14.

GIRO BELLO VOLUNTEERS

With only four weeks left before our third annual Giro Bello triple-cycling events through the hills, creeks and valleys of West County, Doug Johnson left for Costa Rica leaving a grumpy Don McMillan holding the bag, trolling for more volunteers to help with set-up & registration on Friday evening, July 5^th and Saturday morning, July 6^th, at O’Reilly Media. GREAT ROTARY FELLOWSHIP

Not only is pitching in to help essential to the success of Giro Bello, it is our club’s largest and most productive “Hands-on” project in years. While most of Rotary’s active leaders have been deeply involved for months in our Rotary Club’s most effective fundraiser, they could really use your help. It is a great opportunity to get more involved in a variety of ways to be helpful and useful, plus the excitement of being a vital part of the day’s adventures. We could really us your help cleaning up O’Reilly Park on Saturday after 5 pm.

PRESIDENT’S REPORTS

President William gave an enthusiastic report on last weekend’s annual District Conference held at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel & Spa in Santa Rosa, commenting on the depth and diversity of seminars that were presented: Service Projects in a Conflict Zone, the presentation by the French Group Study Exchange Team, the life-changing and highly successful Youth Exchange, with students who are “outbound”, “inbound”, and the “re-bound” students—former exchange students who come back to mentor the new inbound/inbound exchange students.

District dues meeting: Held last Monday afternoon and attended by interested Rotarians from our Rotary Club, District Governor Mike Juric, and DG Elect Helaine Campbell (Sebastopol Sunrise), President William said the meeting was partially successful with a compromise on the timeline of the increase from $39 to $55 per month per club. The discussion also included suggestions for improved communications between the district and member clubs.

ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH

Larry Miyano received his well-deserved recognition for his outstanding work on behalf of our club’s Youth Exchange Student for this coming year.

Wayne Rowlands was voted by the club’s board of directors for cumulative achievements and hard work on behalf of the Rotary Club’s innovative and outstanding website and the club’s digital image locally, district-wide, and around the world…literally!

THE HAROLD D. BOSTOCK AWARD

This prestigious award, named after one of our club’s legendary pioneers, was presented to another pioneer, Jeanne Levin. The Bostock Award is given for achievement, in recognition of a lifetime of service to Rotary. “Queen Jeanne” joined the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa in 1990, one of the first women admitted to Rotary and the first female president of our club. Jeanne became president in 1998, only 77 years after our club was chartered.

ROTARY’S LEGACY PROJECT

John McHugh announced that he had been named chair of an ad hoc committee to research and create what he called “a brand-new, never-been-done-before “Legacy Project” for the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa. He asked for help from members of the club members, outlining project standards and an example of how to use these standards to evaluate a Legacy Project:

Speaking of timing, our lame-duck Prez caught Steve Reuter with an extra $10 in his pocket from his missed chance at today’s Raffle prize. President William parlayed it into $50 for each Paul Harris Fellowship for Steve’s sons.

TODAY’S PROGRAM

When I entered the ballroom this week for the Rotary meeting, the first thing I noticed was a big cylinder on the stage. It looked like a cannon…but that was only the first new thing I learned—and saw—today. The subject was astronomy, and the “cannon” was actually a telescope, and it was empty inside. Linda Sinkay explained that it was a tube to shield the mirror inside from ambient light and hold eyepieces that astronomers use to look at the images reflected from the billions and billions of stars in the universe.

It turned out that astronomers do not think much of the moon, Jim Goodenough explained that was because the moon reflects the light of the sun and lights up the night sky, making it very difficult to see all the stars and galaxies and “other worlds” that are millions of light years away, out there. Both Jim and Linda are fellow Rotarians, members of the Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise, and both are past presidents of their club. What a fascinating half hour this week, with so much to learn and remember: A “telescopic laser” that serves as a pointer, creating a visible green line that helps observers locate a specific object in the sky. We learned about Astro Photography, saw a “globular cluster”, and learned that two different kinds of nebulae exist—“ring nebula” and “veiled nebula”. Actually the generic category of veiled nebulae includes three individually distinct names: “lagoon nebula”, “Witches Broom nebula”, and the repetitive “veiled nebula”. We also witnessed photos of the “Transit of Venus” as a heavenly body moves across of the face of the planet Venus, and tried to comprehend the gigantic size of the Andromeda Galaxy, which covers 2.5 million light years of the universe!

Finally, proof the man in the moon is real!

And, last but not least, we decided to visit SRJC’s Robert Ferguson Observatory and make a note to watch for a newcomer coming soon to our part of the universe on November 28 & 29, when the Comet Ison passes 800,000 miles from the sun.

So I am going into warrior mode and I could use your help. If you think of me, do it with positive energy and strength. Put that out to the universe and I will grab it and use it. Jose Guillen, who continues to monitor Raffle conditions, immediately informed us that there were only 51 playing cards remaining in the velvet bag, and the Raffle Jackpot had grown to $125. Past President Yale Abrams’ number was drawn and revealed to us by one of our French guests, but alas, he drew that 51st card—the Deuce of Spades—and seemed to be content with his $10 consolation prize.

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT-MAY 29, 2013

Scholarship Chair Steve Olson explained three weeks ago that awarding the Rotary Foundation Academic Scholarship during final exams is always a logistical challenge. Which explains why our scholarship awards started on May 15^th and concludes with one final recipient on May 29. Past president Steve introduced us to Therese Brown, a graduate of Pathways Charter School in Rohnert Park, with a 4.0 Grade Point Average at Santa Rosa Junior College. A talented violinist, she will be attending UC Santa Barbara in the fall, majoring in music, plus she plans to continue her education in graduate school. Therese received the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa Trustee Scholarship in the amount of $1500, concluding the year’s presentations of the ten annual scholarships for 2013.

OLSON HONORED BY SRJC

Past President Steve Olson received the annual Presidential Medal of Honor from SRJC President Frank Chong for his long service as dean and faculty member of the school’s agriculture program. Steve attended SRJC as a student and returned in 1970 as one of the earliest faculty members. He helped establish Shone Farm, the college’s working farm near Forestville. After retiring in 2007, Steve still remains active at the college and in the community as a member of this Rotary Club.

President William reminded us again that Rotary’s Annual District Conference is this weekend at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel & Spa in Santa Rosa. If you can make it for any of the events, please come. You can find the conference schedule in last week’s Santa Rosarian or on the District website.

On Monday afternoon, District Governor Michael Juric will meet with the Rotary Club’s board of Directors. Anyone who wants to attend and be part of the discussion about upcoming increase in club dues are welcome to attend the special meeting, starting at 5 pm in the Salvation Army Conference Room, 93 Stoney Circle.

Jackie & Don McMillan announced that Giro Bello needs some pop-up canopies to join our new blue and gold Rotary Club tent, helping promote the Third Annual Giro Bello between now and July 7^th. If you have one to lend, please let them know immediately. Also, if you have not signed up to help on the Giro Bello, the committee really needs your help on both Friday & Saturday, July 5^th and 6^th. As we mentioned last week, the Giro Bello is the largest and most productive “hands on” project of Rotary’s last three years. TRUE CONFESSIONS!

President Bill tried to fine Matt Everson for skipping last week’s meeting and going to the Giant’s game instead. Matt let President Bill know in no uncertain terms that he had already paid for skipping the Rotary meeting to see the game. Then admitted that he planned to miss next week’s meeting to go to a Giant’s game. This set off a chain reaction. It turns out that Gary Vice and Jack Tolin went to that 49er game with Matt! All three truants donated $5.00 each to the club.
But Steve Reuter coughed up $15 after being inspired to admit that he was at the game too, but not with Matt, Gary, and Jack.
Past President Wally Lowry confessed that he had driven to his grandson’s graduation from Chico State, all the way to Chico and back, without his wallet or his driver license. Even with no cash, Wally made it back safely. I guess you could say he “made it under the radar”? Except for his $15 confession charge.

And Penny Tibbetts contributed $50 to the Club Foundation and $50 to the Club for her second-hand recognition generated by her son, Harrison “Jack” Tibbetts, being featured in a big Page One story written by reporter Derek Moore and featured in last Sunday’s Empire section of the Press Democrat. Jack was featured for waging a state-wide political battle against a formidable foe: Big Oil, working to get 500,000 signatures to qualify the California Modernization & Economic Development Act for the November 2014 ballot. Penny ‘fessed up and paid for the honor, just like a proud mama!
President Bill wrapped up his personal fund-raiser, revealing that Jock McNeill, Rick Allen, and Ann Gospe were really close to receiving their Paul Harris Fellowships and told them it would be really nice if they would wrap up their $1,000 contributions to their individual fellowships while he was still Rotary President. Jock donated his final $100, Rick his last $200, and Ann, $125 to complete her relatively new fellowship.

Jeff Gospe Introduced the Rotary Group Study Exchange Team that has been visiting District 5130 from France’s Rotary District 1700 for the past month, wrapping up their visit here in Sonoma County this weekend. Jeff reminded us that this Rotary program began more than 60 years ago, in 1949. This year’s GSE team is from the Toulouse and Montpellier areas of Southern France and Andorra. Team leader Lionel Lainard gave us a video tour of their area of France known for aeronautics, space, and its universities. It is the home of a major cancer research center and common causes that receive support, including research into brain disease, blood drives, and the local food banks. This region of France is known for the Canal Midi, a well-known major waterway across the country, the spectacular Pyrenees Mountains, the ancient city of Lourdes, and rugby. The district contains 89 Rotary Clubs and 11 Rotoract Clubs.

The French GSE team is made up of six young men and women educated & trained in six highly-diverse professions: Each of visitors spoke to us about their professions and their avocations to give us fascinating insights into their individual lives as young French business professionals involved in service to their communities through Rotary:

Emmanuelle Delon works as an information technology manager. She is 38 years old and has two children—Thomas & Mathilde.
Jesus Diaz is a 32 year old physician who specializes in anesthesiology and intensive care. He has developed a medical encyclopedia for the iPhone. His favorite hobby is improvisational theatre.
Celine Mazieres works for a chain of supermarkets as a commercial winery assistant specializing in wines from the southwest region of France. She is 27 years old and loves to travel and focused her comments on her involvement in the Vinovalle Jazz Festival
Jerome Marty is a security engineer for information technology systems. 32 years of age, he enjoys his free time dancing and working on classic automobiles. He belongs to a Porsche Club and drives an old Citroen that he (and his mom) built.
Sophie Guerandel belongs to the local Rotoract Club and will be their president next year. She is a 25 year old litigate attorney employed by the Federal Union of Consumers representing consumers in their claims against business corporations. Sophie loves travel, diving, and hiking.
Lionel Lainard has his own business as a business consultant, coach, and talent development. He mentioned that his dad owns a pet pig. He likes to tango and play music and he also does improvisational theatre.

Our young French .visitors concluded their presentation with a series of trivia questions about La Belle France. We eagerly participated through a show of hands that revealed anonymously our international awareness of their mother country. Or not. I think we all did pretty well!

Speaking of the raffle, the club’s greenest Red Badge member, Darren Elliot, came close to disaster when the lucky ticket was claimed by a smiling Ted Wilmsen, who had cleaned out the $910 Jackpot only three weeks ago! Fortunately he beat the improving odds and drew the 9 of Spades. Whew, that was close!

SIX WEEKS TO GIRO BELLO

Doug Johnson took the floor with the stunning news that we are halfway to meeting our goals for Giro Bello 2014, with six weeks to go. Giro Bello has been the major source of funding for our club’s non-profit grants and most important projects. In an updated report, Layne Bowen emphasized that we are half way to our goal of $30,000 in paid corporate sponsorships for the Giro Bello coming up on July 6^th. This week we exceeded 250 registrations—25 percent more than last year at this time. Total ridership for the 2^nd Giro Bello last summer was over 700 cyclists. This year, we are on track to meet our goal of 1,000 participants in this third Giro Bello.

Last year we netted approximately $50,000 from this event. This year our Giro Bello goal is to generate $75,000 that will increase funding for our Rotary Club’s community projects and grants to local non-profit organizations. Both Layne and Doug urged all of us to get involved in this remarkable Rotary Club opportunity—our largest and most productive “hands on” project of the last three years. Deborah Gray, who has done a great job as chair of this year’s drive for new members, announced— while no one had recruited two members to win the $100 grand prize—that several Rotarians had an additional member in the membership process. The new deadline will be Tuesday night, June 4^th.

Jeff Gospe announced that our club’s Youth Exchange Committee had overcome all bureaucratic obstacles of the local school systems and the club’s 17 year old exchange student for the coming year has been certified. Arriving in August for a year at Santa Rosa High School is Giovanni Provenzano, from Sardinia, one of the large Mediterranean Islands near the west coast of Italy. President William reminded us that a special board meeting of our club will be held on June 3^rd to discuss the substantial increase in dues for all clubs in District 5130. Over the last 91 years, the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa has touched the lives of many thousands of people in Sonoma County, the state of California, the United States, and throughout the world. Rotary was the first service club in the world, and service to others has been our purpose since we were founded.

The scholarships awarded by our 91-year-old Rotary Club are funded by tax-deductible contributions and gifts to the Rotary Club Foundation of Santa Rosa, the charitable arm of this Rotary Club. It accumulates capital to fund worthwhile grants, locally and internationally, creates and awards scholarships, and fund dozens of local projects every year. Each year, this foundation’s volunteers delivers free dictionaries to every third grade, we awarded 11 college scholarships worth almost $20,000 to outstanding, worthy local students, either to enter college, vocational training, university, or to transition from Santa Rosa Junior College to a major university.

The story of Project Amigo is familiar to members of the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa. Founders Susan Hill and Ted Rose have visited Rotary Clubs throughout northern California. They visited this Rotary Club after we became a sponsor of Project Amigo, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enable poor children of the state of Colima, Mexico, to achieve their highest potential, providing the children educational opportunities, material support, enrichment activities, along with medical and dental services not otherwise available. It facilitates partnerships between Rotary Clubs and individuals from Mexico and North America. For the past three years, our World Community Service Committee has designated Project Amigo as our as our anchor project, receiving one-third of our committee’s funds.by our World Community Service Committee, each year receiving 33 percent of the funds allocated to the committee as part of our Rotary Club’s many diverse avenues of community service from Santa Rosa & Sonoma County, the northern coastal communities of District 5130, and worldwide through Rotary International. The impact on the students’ education and lives in the remote backwaters of poverty around the active Volcan de Colima complex has been remarkable, as outlined by Ted and Susan in their presentation and the questions and answers that followed.

THE FOUNDERS OF PROJECT AMIGO

Rotarians Susan Hill, Ted Rose & 27 years of student scholars

About 13 years ago, The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa became a sponsor of Project Amigo with donations for scholarships for middle and high school students. The initial donations were small but over the next ten years grew to a total of $5,000. In the past three years, Project Amigo was designated as our anchor project by our World Community Service Committee, each year receiving 33 percent of the committee’s funds. In 2012-13, this amounted to $4,000 for high school student scholarships! Our Rotary Club now has over 100 disadvantaged students in middle & high school grades and 30 students at the University of Colima, Mexico. Since 2002, more than 64 percent of Project Amigo scholars who entered college have completed their degrees.

OPENING CEREMONIES

President William Rousseau called the meeting to order by inviting Kris Anderson to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Penny Tibbetts continued our tradition of inspiration through quotes by asking us to link some famous quotes with four historical icons: Michael Jordan, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, and Aristotle. Penny seemed surprised that we knew all the answers, collectively, even the icon who advised us to “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.”

VISITING ROTARIANS

A hearty welcome to Brooke Terhune and Sara Giometti from the newly-named “Evening Rotary Club of Santa Rosa”. Sponsored by Sonoma County’s “Mother Club”—the original Rotary Club of Santa Rosa—the former New Generations Club was one of the first of the new-format Rotary Clubs when it was founded in March 2011. As so many of our club’s “Older Generation” knows, it is always great when the kids come home for a short visit.

Speaking of Mr. Knickerbocker, have you noticed that the weekly raffle hasn’t been the same since he’s been missing in action? On May 1^st Ted Wilmsen emptied $910 from the Raffle Jackpot, and last week Debra Smith walked away with one-fourth of the tiny $41 Jackpot. This week, CPA Judy Glenn did the best she could and Tim Delany earned a measly $10 with his eight of spades. Yep, things are beginning to look up, raffle-wise, now that Raffle Guru Nick will be back in charge soon.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President William stunned us with the news that District 5130 will raise the club’s annual dues from $39 to $55 per member as of July 1^st. The substantial increase in dues to our Rotary District will be discussed at a special board meeting on Monday afternoon, June 3. A district representative will attend our board meeting. All interested Rotarians are welcome to attend the meeting at 5 pm in the Salvation Army conference room, 93 Stoney Circle. First come, first seated…after our hard-working board of directors.

Urgent Giro Bello Meeting: 12 noon next Thursday, May 23^rd. All Rotarians who want to be actively involved in the club’s 3^rd annual cycling event should attend the extremely important planning meeting at the offices of DeMeo, DeMeo & West, 565 West College Avenue

Jackie McMillan proudly presented a beautiful tropical banner from the Rotary Club of Honolulu to President William. Further recognition was postponed due to today’s busy schedule.

Debi Zaft announced that she has scheduled the Rotary Magazine Quiz at next Wednesday’s meeting. To qualify for the prize drawing you must be prepared to answer this question last month’s May issue of The Rotarian magazine: What country’s political and religious leaders boycotted the polio vaccine in 2003 and is now the only place in the world where polio cases are increasing? Here’s a clue: (Last year, in 2012, 122 cases were reported—more than twice as many as reported in 2011.)

Social Director Debi Zaft reminded us that Rotary’s next social will be held on Thursday afternoon, May 23^rd, at Kunde Family Winery starting at 5:30 pm. The tasting room is to your left, between the cities of Kenwood & Glen Ellen at 9825 Sonoma Highway. Debi also reminded us that Kunde has an abundance of wines awaiting our arrival. She suggests we bring appetizers for all of us to share.

Those changes continue and accelerate in well into this century and accelerated population changes in the United States that impacted lives, families and traditions, especially in certain parts of our country. Most of us have experienced the results and our Rotary Club has responded to concerns about young people, education, and new demands on society. In 1965, after being the first and only Rotary Club in Sonoma County for 44 years, we sponsored the first of 26 Rotary Clubs in Sonoma County, either directly or indirectly

The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa Foundation is the charitable arm of this Rotary Club. It accumulates capital to fund worthwhile grants locally and internationally, create and award scholarships, and fund dozens of local projects every year. ENHANCING OUR ROTARY IMAGE

Negligent Rotarians not wearing their obligatory Rotary pins were chastised again by President William at this week’s Rotary meeting. $2 each! You might ask, “What’s the big deal if we don’t wear that little gold pin?”

Each of us represents all of the Rotarians who have served this community since 1921. After more than 90 years, it is our responsibility to focus on enhancing Rotary’s brand—our public image—here in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County. For almost a century, as members of the world’s first service club, generations of business leaders have dedicated themselves to doing all that they could to improve our local communities, the families, individuals, young students, adults and older citizens that are born, grow up, and spend their lives & resources in this community. Each of us in Rotary is most aware of all that we accomplish as Rotarians.

But part of our obligation as Rotarians is that we owe it to ourselves and our fellow Rotarians—past, present, and future– to share that news with everyone that we know & meet. Is it supposed to be a secret that we are Rotarians? Are we ashamed to wear a Rotary pin? How many of our friends, family, and business associates know we are Rotarians and what that means to our personal and business relationships? Does your website, Facebook, and Twitter reflect the Rotary brand through your choice of colors & graphics? Help raise awareness of Rotary in our community by showing your Rotary colors, wearing your Rotary pin, and telling others about the remarkable things that Rotary does for this community and has done for almost 100 years.

The knowledgeable presentation team from Best Buy & Magnolia Audio Video gave us a summary of the major advances in high-end consumer electronics, home theaters of our dreams, and entertainment centers created specifically for outdoor living. Plus a hands-on preview of the still-to-be-released Sony 4K Ultra High-Definition television.

POLIO PROGESS IN AFRICA

Thousands of health workers and volunteers mobilized public support for polio eradication and immunized children against the disease recently during National Immunization Days in Côte d’lvoire (Ivory Coast). Volunteers distributed vitamin A supplements and de-worming tablets to improve public health, which is another objective in the polio endgame strategy.

TYPE 1 POLIO IN SOMALIA

A case of type 1 polio has been reported in the Banadir region of Somalia, the country’s first case since March 2007. In response, an immunization campaign took place May 14-16, aimed at reaching more than 350,000 children in the Banadir region. Rotary also mourns the loss of a friend in the polio eradication effort, Abdul Waheed Khan, who died tragically in an attack in Pakistan on May 13.

Our Club’s beautiful new Rotary Awareness tent made its first appearance last weekend at the Wells Fargo Center along with our club’s volunteers for the Wine Country Century cycling event. If you participate in the Human Race this weekend, look for our blue & gold Rotary tent. Next weekend; at Petaluma Rotary Sunrise’s Backroad Challenge 3rd annual cycling event. Maybe you would like to help promote Giro Bello and man the tent at the Wednesday Night Market on 4th Street in downtown Santa Rosa.

This tent is the current effort of the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa to communicate with the local community of all the great things that our club and Rotary is doing to help make contributions that help our community for the better.
