CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY UPDATE 2017
Keith Woods

Woods_Keith picThe Rotary Club of Santa Rosa’s program for January 18th is Keith Woods, who will be speaking to us about the current state of construction in Sonoma County and what we can expect in the near future.

Keith has conducted customer service and leadership training in the North Bay and throughout the nation for over 20 years. The humor, innovation and common sense he injects into his programs have made him a popular presenter to over 900 business, professional, governmental, and educational groups in 48 U.S. states and in Canada.

Keith serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the North Coast Builders Exchange, an 1100-member construction industry association serving Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, and Napa Counties.  He was also President / CEO of the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce from 1987-2000.

JANUARY BIRTHDAYS WITH KIM MURPHY

Where are all our January birthday people?  STEVE OLSON was the only person with a January birthday that was here today.  I hope all the rest are sipping Pina coladas somewhere warm and dry! PRESIDENT JOSE serenaded him with a birthday song “Las Mañanitas” in Spanish! Other January birthdays:  ED ANDERSON, GUY FIERI, MARNIE GOLDSCHLAG,  JEFF GOSPE, PETE LESCURE, STEPHAN PASSALACQUA,  and KATHY SCHWARTZ

AND THE SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGER WINNER IS……

Blain Goodwin

Blain Goodwin

Us of course, per KERRIE CHAMBERS and BLAINE GOODWIN. However we had serious competition from the 4Hers!  Our club collected just a smidge less than $7000. BLAINE thanked us for our hard work.  During bell ringing season they have 14-30 locations going with volunteer bell ringers.  The money collected goes to such projects as Double Punch Boxing Club and after school tutoring.

DICTIONARY PROJECT

TED WILMSEN announced that the dictionaries were out in the parking lot today and all teams should pick them up today.

CRAFT TALK:  BILL PEDERSEN

Debi Zaft - Bill Pedersen

Debi Zaft – Bill Pedersen

DEBI ZAFT spoke for BILL.  BILL joined our club in 1954!  His father joined our club in 1921 right after our club started. He graduated from high school in 1949 and went to Business College.  He spent his whole career working in the family store.  He was married to Patricia for 60 years when she died 7 years ago.  He has two children, Dick and Ann.  He loves to travel!  He has been to 48 of the 50 states and 97 countries.  He plays the saxophone with a band for many years; even saw Glen Miller play!

RECOGNITIONS

LARRY MIYANO has a new car; a 3 series BMW that he purchased from ROY THYLIN.  LARRY really liked the car and kept asking if he was interested in selling. Finally, ROY was ready to sell.  Well, ROY loves his cars!  So what did he get as a replacement?  A Porsche!  PRESIDENT JOSE has already put his name out there to buy that car when ROY is tired of the Porsche SUV.  LARRY and ROY both donated some money to the club.

ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH

KIM GRAVES was selected as Rotarian of the month for her leadership of the Poinsettia Project this year.  Plus she has volunteered to chair it next year!

GUEST SPEAKER BILL WITTICH, “STOP RECRUITING AND START ATTRACTING.”

Bill is an author, USC grad and a resident of Elk Grove, CA.  He was here to talk about attracting members, not recruiting.

Dr. Bill Wittich

Dr. Bill Wittich

Recruitment:  Why do we want new members?  New ideas, more to do the good work we do, replace members who leave/pass away, and fellowship/friendship.

Attraction:  Why do they want us?

  1. Business connections and networking
  2. They want to make new friends…have a social connection
  3. They want to learn something new
  4. They want to have fun
  5. The want to do service for their community/world

So, focus on attraction.  What benefits them?  What benefits our club?  Understand that all members have expectations so ask them what they want!

Rotary is not looking for warm bodies that write a check.  Bill has a bad Starbucks habit so he has turned it into an occasion to meet people and ask them to a Rotary meeting.  He knows that 20 year olds are interested in environmental issues.  30- 40 year

Dr. Bill Wittich

olds are family oriented.  Women are becoming CEOs. Boomers are getting ready to retire and they want something to do once they retire.  Diversity is not just race and ethnicity.  It is also about different professions.  Rotarians have to base their attraction on what these diverse groups are interested.

Are you a member of the Chamber of Commerce?  A ripe area to look for people to invite to our meetings.  ASK YOU FRIENDS.  They just might surprise you.  Ask local business owners to speak at your meeting and then invite them to be members.

We need to use social media more.  Tweet, use Facebook

714udRkBrLLDo not invite someone to a meeting…..invite them to “lunch.”   Pick them up to come if you have to.  Our club pays for their first meeting

The most common objections are time and money.  Rotary no longer has a requirement for the number of meetings attended each month.  There are e-clubs and those that meet every other week to keep costs down.  What can/should our club do to make time and money not an issue to join?
