Our Program For January 22nd

SOUTHEAST GREENWAY CAMPAIGN

southeast-greenway

The Southeast Greenway Campaign is a community-based effort to develop a vital urban greenway on the stretch of open space that links Spring Lake to Highway 12 at Farmer’s Lane, creating a valuable community asset for the citizens of Santa Rosa and Sonoma County. Our campaign is committed to shaping the Southeast Greenway based on principles of sustainability – respect for the environment, economic vitality, and social equity – and on community input, needs and desires.

We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to link Spring Lake, Howarth and Annadel Parks with downtown Santa Rosa, creating a much-needed east-west connection for alternative transportation, restored creeks, open space, community gardens and recreation. This piece of land is the best and last chance to connect park trails on the eastern side of Santa Rosa with trails that pass through the center of the city and continue on to the Russian River at Forestville, a distance of more than 26 miles.

Thea Hensel & Linda Proulx have been Co Chairs of the Campaign since inception and will be presenting updates on this exciting amenity for Santa Rosa.

Doug Johnson announced the increased goal for this year’s Giro Bello event.  Last year we raised $47,000 and this year “our” hope is to raise $70,000.  Doug explained that we can accomplish this by increasing our riders from 700 to 1000 and increasing our sponsorship income by $5,000.

Doug Chase asked if anyone had a used or broken down bicycle that he could mount on his RV to promote the Giro Bello.  The plan is for this vehicle to have posters and bike on it and brought to various venues to promote our major event.

Speaker

Speaker Jon Stout

PROGRAM

Introduced by Wayne Rowlands, Jon Stout, Airport manager at Sonoma County Airport whose presentation covered the current operation of the Sonoma County Airport and a report on the expansion of the Airport that is underway.  At this time the airport has 2 runways. The FFA is requiring longer runways as part of the project that is under way with hopes of being completed by the fall of 2014. At this time Alaska and Horizon airlines fly out of the airport to 4 destinations (Seattle, San Diego, Los Angeles and Portland).  In 2013 227,998 passengers flew out of the Sonoma County.  Other destinations that are being considered are Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.  In addition, there have been talks to add Reno, Palm Springs, Orange county, Long Beach, Hawaii and Guadalajara. With the expanded runways this would be possible.

The economic impact of the airport is impressive. Revenues for operations are at $134 million and the airport accounts for 496 local jobs.  With expanded services these numbers would significantly increase. Concerns about noise to the town of Windsor have been tempered by new flight landed routes and new technology. The airport will also be restricted to a maximum of 21 flights daily.

In addition to the expanded runways the project overview includes service roads, taxiways, install box covert and relocate navigation aids. Jon’s presentation concluded with a question and answer session. For more information go to www.STSrunwayproject.com
