CREATIVE SONOMA EDB

The Creative Economy is a growing force for healthy communities, both economically and culturally.  In California, studies show that creative industries account for nearly 1 in every 9 jobs.  The County of Sonoma began specifically addressing this sector in 2015 with the launch of Creative Sonoma, a new division of the Economic Development Board.  Kristen Madsen, the Director of the new agency, will address what the creative community looks like in Sonoma, how Creative Sonoma is working to support and advance it, and what that might mean for the residents of the County.

• President Doug announced that the club meeting on February 10^th will be held at St. Rose. He also asked anyone who is not wearing a Rotary pin to pay $2 or, if needed, buy a new pin for $5.

NEW GENERATION PEACE SCHOLARS 

On Friday, President Doug, Diane Moresi and Casey D’Angelo met with 26 high school students from Santa Rosa to kick off our exciting new Rotary project.  All seemed energized by the student response and we look forward to seeing positive results. More on this next week

PROGRAM

Professional guest speaker, Keith Woods regaled us today with fun and enlightening stories of his 35 plus year association with the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. Keith shared his stories with his usual dry wit and with a twinkle in his eye. A couple of his better stories included:

One about how Joe DiMaggio and Willie Mays of the first class praised each other as being the best when the reputation was that each resented the other and each thought he was the best.

Another fun story had to do with Keith’s pre-event meeting with broadcaster Pat Summerall at his hotel room. Pat apparently appeared very, very drunk. Keith quickly started making contingency plans in the event Pat was too drunk to make the presentations. Once onstage, however, Pat was the epitome of professionalism (and apparent sobriety!), handling his duties flawlessly.

Editor’s Note

You’ve probably noticed that the bulletin has been a bit shorter lately. A committee was recently formed (headed by Bill Hatcher) to consider the ways in which we share information within our club as well as outside the club. It was determined that much of the information that we’ve been publishing really doesn’t accomplish much other than to give a pretty detailed record of what we did at any particular meeting.  Much of it is somewhat insignificant.

Ultimately, what we really want to do is highlight the important stuff. This accomplishes a couple of things: 1) it makes writing the bulletin much easier reduces the time it takes to produce 2) It focuses us on what we really want to share about our club. 

To that end, we’d like to ask all committee chairs to give us a periodic report any time your committee does something of note. Please email an edited description of what your particular committee did or plans to do in Word format, to Layne Bowen.  A paragraph or two are probably all that’s needed. Photos are always great to enhance the story, so feel free to send those as well.  We can then simply cut and paste your story into an issue with ease.

At this time, we’ll continue to have a Bulletin section on our website, but that may change. We are considering ways to allow people to access the bulletin with greater ease. More changes may be forthcoming. Perhaps, like our guest speaker announcements, we’ll put the Santa Rosarian on Facebook.
