STOP RECRUITING / START ATTRACTING
Dr Bill Wittich

Membership is critical for all Rotary clubs. These new members must include a mix of younger, middle aged and older members. It is this variety in age that increases the quality of a club’s membership. This is a presentation about membership and change. Many clubs overlook the fact that the majority of their members will be retiring in the next decade and that the generations to follow are radically different from the generations of the past.

It is critical for all Rotary leaders to understand that what brought them into Rotary may not be the same thing that will bring this next generation into Rotary. While the current excitement is finding young people to bring into Rotary, there is a large group of retiring Boomers that could help to increase our membership. They are a vital group of healthy, wealthy and wise potential Rotarians. They are very different from those young prospects in many ways and the attraction process is different for both groups.

Dr. Bill Wittich is a speaker, consultant, and author in the field of leadership, motivation, and nonprofit management. His doctorate is from the University of Southern California Dr. Wittich has authored ten books in the Rotary, association and non-profit field including his latest “Stop Recruiting/ Start Attracting” which is focused on bringing members into Rotary.

Bill is also an instructor for Far West President-Elect Training Seminar. Bill and his wife Ann enjoy living in Elk Grove, where they enjoy cooking, collecting antiques, and learning about red wine.

IN THE BEGINNING (of 2017)

Sporting a magic “Happy New Years” hat and with a hearty  clang of the Rotary bell, President Jose Guillen  rang in the New Year and bid us a grand “Hello and Happy New Year!”

Larry Miyano started the Pledge of Allegiance and Cathy Vicini brought the Thought-for-the-Day:  Let’s count our blessings for 2016 and one of those is the Rotary fellowship we have when we work on projects with a shared common goal.  She encouraged us to live 2017 with no regrets, be confident and have no fear.

VISITING ROTARIANS

Past President Kathleen Archer introduced Doug Garrison of the Monterey Club (Higher Education).  Doug  might become a member of our club, per Past President Steve Olson.

GUESTS OF ROTARIANS

Guests today were: Michele Baime (spouse of Steve Baime), Patricia Farrell, Alex Ward, Marty Vegue and Ryan McMillan (son of Don and Jackie McMillan)

MOSTLY SUNNY REPORT

Ginny Cannon reports that Jack Abercrombie has bronchitis.  Layne Bowen had eye surgery and is recovering.

RAFFLE

With about $25 in the pot, the participation  level was about that of a 49er game this past season.  Past President Fred Levin handled the duty and Kim Murphy handled the $10 consolation prize money.  Better luck next week, with one less blue marble.

JOKESTER CORNER

Cathy Vicini delivered a joke selected by her employees.   The answer: “the cat ate the goldfish.”  The story:  A neighbor peeked over his fence and saw the next door neighbor girl dig a big hole and cover it with flowers.  He asked what she was doing and her reply was that she was burying her goldfish.  He asked why the hole was so big. She answered.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Jose issued a plea for volunteers to help write the weekly Club Bulletin.  Please contact Kris Anderson if you can do this sometime in the next two months while the Bulletin committee chair Layne Bowen is out of commission.

The next S.C.A.R.C. meeting is January 26 at Fountaingrove and the focus will be the NewGen peace program and the guest speaker will be our own Past President Doug Johnson.

‘Mister Dictionary’  Ted Wilmsen states that the dictionaries will be available to distribute to Rotarian volunteers  at our next meeting (January 11).  Volunteers who are assigned to schools should pick-up  the books from Ted and then contact the school principal to schedule a delivery date.  Ted needs two more volunteers to assist with this (no experience necessary) – contact him directly if you can help.  The books will be available in the Flamingo parking lot before and after the club meeting.

President Jose tells us that the dictionary books are still relevant in today’s techno age.  Many of the kids don’t have high tech access and the dictionary book remains a good investment in their future.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND HAPPY DOLLARS

President Jose politely extracted these sums from some worthy Rotarians:

Past President Don and Jackie McMillan for travel to the other coast and for having their son Ryan at the meeting, Don and Jackie paid up by buying two squares on the Polio Plus board.

Tim Delaney paid $100 toward a P.H. Fellowship.  Would have been more, but he was poorer this month from missing out on some property tax relief for his home remodel.

Past President Steve Olson had a 45-year anniversary with his bride Elaine, so he bought five squares on the Polio Plus board to commemorate that notable accomplishment.

Darrell Horn offered up US$50 for his upcoming Mexico trip. Adios Darrell.

Past President Doug Johnson pledged $50 to Polio Plus and $50 to the Foundation (RI or local?) and another $50 on the celebration of having his third granddaughter.

NEWGEN PEACE PROGRAM

President Jose ran a video showing what the NewGen Peace program is doing to educate young people on the principles of peace and to help them develop leadership skills while they learn to become peace-builders.  Casey D’Angelo gave his testimony about the program  and asked for two more mentors to be involved with the next training  course (five days total, spread over 3 months).

THE PROGRAM

Our speaker was Justin Reyes, sales manager for Mycopia Mushrooms.  He was introduced by our own wild mushroom hunter, Steve Marburger (‘wild’ refer

ring to the mushrooms, not to Steve).

Justin gave us interesting information about all things mushroom – from gathering wild ones to cultivating the less wild ones – and in every facet of detail that 30 minutes would allow.  Basically, it was everything you wanted to know about mushrooms but were afraid to ask.

He brought free samples of the cultivated m’rooms to take home with us (the edible ones that is).  He pointed out that Sonoma County is a great place to hunt the wild ones.  But, first, you’d better be educated on which ones are edible and which ones are poisonous.  They can look a lot alike.

THE EXIT

President Jose closed by thanking all the volunteers for today’s meeting (you know who you are!).   The ones not mentioned above are:  Larry Miyano (greeter), Doug Roberts, Chip Rawson, Los Barron, Past President  & Club Secretary Debi Zaft.
