Our Program For January 15th

SONOMA COUNTY AIRPORT

airport-runway-north-ends

Located in the heart of Northern California’s world-renowned Wine Country, Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport (STS) is the only airport that offers scheduled air service into the North Bay region. Alaska Airlines offers daily nonstop flights to and from Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego, and Seattle; four great cities that offer a wide range of connecting flights to destinations in the U.S. and around the world. Visitors and residents alike find STS an easy and convenient airport for getting to and from Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, and Sonoma Counties.

jon-stout-airport-managerOur speaker this week will be Airport Manager Jon Stout. Construction is officially underway on the runway expansion of the Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport, a project that will bring the airport’s runways up to current federal standards and potentially attract new commercial airlines and added destinations.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS

January 22: Southeast Greenway
January 29: Public Safety Awards
February 5: Miss Sonoma County 2013 – Ashley Kimball

OPENING CEREMONIES

President Peggy opened the meeting of the finest club in District 5130 with her usual graceful and calm style. She invited Tim Delaney to lead the Club in the Pledge and then Mike Kahlhoff noted that the first question asked in Rotary’s Four Way Test is: Is it the truth? He then read a story about perspective. In other words, the truth may be perceived differently from one person to another based on each person’s own viewpoint and beliefs.

VISITING ROTARIANS

Doug Roberts of Santa Rosa Sunrise and Jean Herschede of Healdsburg came along for the stories and good times.

GUESTS

There were only a handful of guests today.

BIRTHDAYS BY: Elizabeth Karbousky

Apparently, us January kids aren’t all that many!

Of those called, only Marnie Goldschlag, Steve Olson and your esteemed Editor were at the meeting. Those first two got movie passes and I got some awesome brownies to ruin my resolution to lose weight! Those not present: Ed Anderson, Lance Badger, Guy Fieri, Jeff Gospe, Peter Lescure, Stephan Passalacqua and Mike Tosti.

Steve Olsen, Marnie Goldschlag and Matt Everson. Happy Birthday!

TODAY’S RAFFLE

The raffle had around $1,300 on the line. Red Badger Eunice Valentine had her number pulled but she wasn’t that lucky. She drew no joker and the pot will roll over for next week.

CASINO ROYALE – CANCELLED

President Peggy made a difficult announcement that the Board had called off our Casino Royale fundraiser due to lack of ticket sales and auction items. President Peggy, however recognized Debi Zaft for the hard work she has put into this event. She stated a new fundraiser will take its place and news is forthcoming.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ted Wilmsen announced it is dictionary crunch time! Get with your school principals, set dates and deliver those tomes, people!

Matt Fannin talked about the new slide show program running before each meeting. If you’d like your business to appear as a sponsor, contact the marketing committee for details! Thanks to Wayne Rowlands and Darren Elliott for their hard work and expertise, we have seen a noticeable improvement in both our meeting and website media.

RECOGNITION

President Peggy showed various photos of Rotarians at Work in the community singing and delivering poinsettia and ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Jock McNeil told the Club over $4,200 was raised by ringing the bells this year, way up from last year!  Thanks to the Rotarians who participated this year!

Kathleen Archer got dinged for traveling the globe. First Kauai, then Austria and Germany. $50 was paid to the Club and $50 to John Brown.

Next was a photo of Rick Allen sleeping peacefully – at a Club meeting!  Nice!  $50 to the Club.

PROGRAM

Speaker Christine Fontaine

Speaker Christine Fontaine

Today’s speaker was Christine Fontaine, Director of Education Programs at the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation.  Christine is obviously in love with her work at the Laguna and gave our Club an introduction into what is going on out in one of California’s most important watersheds.

After an education overview of the foundation, Ms. Fountaine delved into the new “Playscape” at the environmental center. It will be an intentional space created for children to explore on their own, in a safe, natural environment.  The idea is to allow the kids to connect with nature and natural elements.

With rocks, logs to climb on, places to dig and all kinds of sensory experiences with plants and tiny animals…. lots of hands on play!

What is greatest about this whole new project is our Club is involved!  We are finalizing details now on a “Hands On Project” to help build bird feeders, benches, and create other kid-friendly play structures to make this “Playscape” an educational jewel for the children of Sonoma County.

Watch for and listen for more details from Troy Carrington but mark down April 12, 2014 as the date for the first of several ‘work days’ at the Laguna!

PEGGY’S CLOSING QUOTE

President Peggy ended the meeting today with a quote from Oprah Winfrey, “Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right!”

NEWS FROM ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

How will you answer the question: What is Rotary? Join our LinkedIn discussion to share your response and learn how other members are talking about Rotary. Scroll down…….

RI-people-copy

For years, we described Rotary by the numbers: 1,220,115 members in 34,558 clubs in 200 countries and regions. Impressive figures, for sure, but they only tell part of our story. What numbers can’t convey is the essence of Rotary –- what sets us apart and inspires people to get involved.

So we interviewed members around the world to discover why they’re passionate about Rotary. What we found was a new way of talking about Rotary that focuses on three core ideas. Through Rotary, you can:
• Join leaders from all continents, cultures, and occupations
 • Exchange ideas, bringing our expertise and diverse perspectives to help solve some of the world’s toughest problems
 • Take action to bring lasting change to communities around the world
It’s not a new story but it is a new way of telling our story, one that conveys the top two reasons people join Rotary: for friendship and to make a difference in their communities.

When you share your passion for Rotary, you have the power to change a stranger into a volunteer, a colleague into a donor, and a family member into a Rotarian.

So the next time someone asks you, What is Rotary? you have a clear and compelling answer: “Through Rotary, I have a friend, partner, and adviser in communities around the world who are helping me make a difference.”
