By 86 Years Old Polio Survivor

Laura Vezzetti

This week’s program – Canine Companions for Independence

The dogs are Labrador Retrievers or Golden Retrievers (or a mix of the two).  800+ puppies are born each year into the program.  There are about 1200 volunteers raising those puppies.  After the first 18 months they go to professionals for further training.  50%+ of the dogs make it through the program and get assigned to a disabled person.  Those that do not pass may go to other programs, the person who raised them or some other good family.  The training costs about $50,000 for the life of the dog.  Most will be in service 8-10 years.

Speaker Angie Escudero presented a very moving video Canine Companions – Sonic.
