The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa:
Challenge and Opportunity

President Tony Roehrick

Synopsis:  The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa finds itself in a similar situation as most clubs in the western world.  Our challenges are to attract new and younger members, get our message and successes out to the greater community, and take care of our current members so their Rotary experience remains relevant and important in their lives.  All challenges are really an opportunity waiting to be recognized.  In addition to these global Rotary challenges, locally, we are also in the emerging stages of recovery from a significant natural disaster.  This provides an opportunity for our local Rotary to emerge as a leader in the fire recovery efforts over the next five years.  This week’s session will focus on where we are as a club in terms of membership and how we can position ourselves as a significant leader in fire recovery.  This effort has the potential to bring in new members wanting to be a part of local service and cement their commitment to our community and Rotary.

Bio: Tony Roehrick is a career educator having been a teacher, principal, and superintendent over the past 30+ years.  Tony’s education includes a BA in Photojournalism (yes, he started out as a journalist), two credentials for teaching and administration, a MA in Educational Administration, and a doctoral degree (Ed.D.) in Leadership Organization.  He is married to Laura and has two daughters, Kaity Gonzalez and Tasha Lopez, and four grandchildren with one on the way.

Sunshine Report

Carolyn Fassi is healing nicely  from her hip replacement surgery last week.  Pete Lescure has offered to give her a ride to a doctor’s appointment next week.  Jack Abercrombie will be getting his pacemaker next week.  Tim Fawcett sent a thank you note for all the support our club has given him.

Raffle:

Our guest, Audrey Brown, had the winning ticket today, but with only 3 marbles left, she did not pull the correct marble.

Giro Bello:

The ride is now over!  It was a very hot day and only 79 of 877 riders did not show up.  We had 35 walk ins! Jackie will report on the financials in a couple of weeks.  Jeff Kolin read a few of the thank you emails.  They confirm what we already know….it is the BEST ride in Sonoma County!  One rider from team Asha had a serious injury.  Her team thanked us for the prompt medical help.  Other good news is that we got $38,000 in sponsorships.   Many thanks to those sponsors!  Jeff was recognized for the great job in directing Giro Bello this year and he, thanked everyone that worked long hours before, during and after the event.  It was truly a team effort and everyone in the club played a part.  Kudos to all!

Bocce Ball Tournament:

Coming up the first weekend in August.  Sebastopol wants to kick our butts!

Audrey Brown is our out bound student this year.  She is selling raffle tickets to earn money for the trip.  The prize?  A homemade dinner for 8 which may be Danish food?  She is going to Denmark.

Matthew Henry announced a family social for August 5th 12:30 pm at the YMCA.  Bring the kids and grandkids.

Debunking of President Julia:

As per custom, we have a little fun at the expense of the out going president.  So, we got a little history of Julia and her upbringing in Minnesota and how she got to Santa Rosa. Various members of the club played parts of her family and other representative persons in her life.  The debunking committee did a fine job on the script.  Jeanne Levin directed and the following people participated:  Ginny Cannon (mom), Yale Abrams (dad), Andrea Geary and Robbie Fouts (Julia….yes Robbie made a fine Julia), Rose Wognum Frances(herself) Don McMillan (attorney), Debi Zaft (Club Secretary), Vickie Hardcastle (judge), Fred Levin (Rotarian), Chip Rawson (Rotarian),  Jose Guillen (Narrator).

Julia was born to be a leader.  One of 7 children ….She was second to last.  They lived in St Paul, MN.  Madeline Island was a favorite place for the family to vacation.  She and Rose named one of their daughters after this island.  She wanted to live in California so off she went.  She worked as a Personal Injury defense attorney in San Francisco.  It appears that the office dress code required her to wear a dress/suit and heals.  She and Rose moved to Santa Rosa and she started her own practice.  Finally, she gets to join our Rotary club in 2007!  Now that she has been president she wants to be president of all the local clubs (we are not going to let her leave!).

The skit ended with Julia getting her past presidents pin from Jose.  Nice way to end a momentous year!

Tim Fawcett Go Fund Me

“Tim Fawcett has been a member of the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa for over 20 years and every year he has been the Club’s Santa for our annual Christmas party for children.

Tim Fawcett – 18 years of perfect attendance!

Last Christmas, Tim didn’t show up for the party and the club records found we only had a P.O. box address for him. After four to six hours a friend of Tim’s dropped by to find him latying on the ground as he had fallen off the roof onto his head. Tim spent the next month in Memorial Hospital at a cost of 1.3 million dollars. He had some insurance, but not nearly enough to cover this type of accident and care.

Tim now is living on $50.00 a week from the state. He has a home and two cars, but he cannot drive. It is a very slow recovery with no light at the end of the tunnel. He still has no sense of smell, taste and very little short term memory. He has no tv (and doesn’t want one), but has a radio, a computer and four walls.

Some club members are working on getting him federal disability, but it is a slow process. They are trying to keep him busy with walks, calls and visits. Last Sunday, they held a very successful picnic which Tim was able to attend. Between the club meeting and picnic, we were able to raise $2,000. A GoFundMe account has been set up in Tim’s name and currently, it has over $2,200 in deposits. To keep it going, a steady stream of contributions is needed. If you are able to help a fellow Rotarian, please go to www.gofundme.com/tim-fawcett-recovery-fund.”
