Visiting Rotarians

Guests

Former member Matt and his lovely wife Sarah Everson visited us today. Chelsea Kurnick and Ron Gallagher were also in the house.

Sunshine

Debi Zaft reported that Norm Owen’s wife Beverly broke her leg. Asked for volunteers to provide some dinners while Beverly recovers.

Raffle

$398.00 in the pot. Matt Everson’s wife, “Shirley” pulled Mathew’s ticket, but he pulled the wrong marble.

Cathy’s a Clown

An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman were trying to determine what type of cow they were observing. The udderly ridiculous punchline was, “The Scotsman said, it’s a Scottish cow – it has bagpipes underneath!”

Announcements

  • Casey has Giro Bello lawn signs. Please get one to display in a conspicuous place.
  • Julia announced that today is the last day for early registration for the International convention in Honolulu.
  • Ann Gospe announced we are short of volunteers for Giro Bello.
  • Vicky said it’s buy one, get one for $100 donations and up to the foundation.
  • Ray Giampaoli needs more sponsorships. We are at $37,000, but short our goal. Ray asked for $100 donations.

Recognitions

Ted Wilmson saw an opportunity to go up on a B17 Flying Fortress from the Sonoma County Airport. He took it and said it was a thrilling half hour flight. He donated $100 to the John Brown scholarship fund.

Will Haymaker was recognized for his photo as the best photo in the Press Democrat.

Shelterbox

Ned Morris, from Walla Walla, WA Rotary shared information about Shelterbox. He shared how Shelter Box is being used in the US helping tornado victims, as well as Phillipines, the Caribbean and other locations around the world.

Program

Diane Moresi introduced fellow SR Rotarian Doug Chase as today’s speaker. Dr. Chase lectures both nationally and internationally.

Today, Doug shared his once in a lifetime expedition to Patagonia with his brother, Jeff. Doug first showed us video of his boat ride to Antarctica and photos of penguins on the Shetland Islands as well as the peninsula on Antarctica where they eventually landed. He shared photos of sailing boats at Antarctica which amazed Doug. Doug and his brother Jeff went kayaking while there. He noted that not many species of wildlife exist in that environment, but there are A LOT of whatever species that are there.

The expedition visited the Antarctic Circle for a glass of champagne, then on to US owned Palmer Station, and other sites, including a one night camping  trip listening to glaciers calving. At this point, the Rotary Media Gods got their pound of flesh stating with a really, really loud buzz which seemed to last for hours……after which, Doug lost his voice (or at least his microphone).

Doug then showed photos from Cape Horn where they observed valley glaciers in the fiords of Tierra del Fuego, Chile and spectacular mountains. This trip showed off Doug’s awesome photography skills. Oh, yes – Doug proposed to Allison! All in all it was a good program showing the adventurous side of one of our members who also has mad photography and power point skills!
