Our Program for March 23rd:

SENATOR MIKE MCGUIRE

The Issues We Care About

Senator McGuire

Senator Mike McGuire is a third generation Northern Californian whose family farmed prunes and grapes in the Alexander Valley for nearly a half century.  Raised by his mom and grandma, Mike worked his way through high school and college and enjoyed a career in the radio and television industries.

Mike was first elected to the Healdsburg School Board when he was 19.  As one of Northern California’s youngest school board presidents, he led successful efforts to rebuild local decaying schools.  In 2004, he was elected to the Healdsburg City Council and in 2010 Mike was elected to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors where he served for four years.

In December of 2014, Mike was sworn into the State Senate where he represents the Second Senate District, which stretches from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon Border.  The district includes Del Norte, Trinity, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin counties.

Mike attended Santa Rosa Junior College and graduated from Sonoma State University.  He is married to local high school teacher and middle school assistant-principal, Erika McGuire.  Erika and Mike live in Healdsburg.

PROGRAM

Copperfield speaker2Paul Jaffe, founder and co –owner of Copperfield’s Books shared his company vision for being a full service local bookstore. He noted that bookstores can provide advantages that online booksellers cannot. Mr. Jaffe is proud that Copperfield’s is a meeting place as well as a place to buy books.  His knowledgeable staff can make recommendations, offer insights and order hard to find books for patrons.

Copperfield’s also pioneered author speaking events at their stores and over the years has worked closely with schools for educator events that promote new learning materials, and offering discounts for books each school desires. In addition to books, Copperfield’s also sells E books, as well as books online.

Editor’s Note

You’ve probably noticed that the bulletin has been a bit shorter lately. A committee was recently formed (headed by Bill Hatcher) to consider the ways in which we share information within our club as well as outside the club. It was determined that much of the information that we’ve been publishing really doesn’t accomplish much other than to give a pretty detailed record of what we did at any particular meeting.  Much of it is somewhat insignificant.

Ultimately, what we really want to do is highlight the important stuff. This accomplishes a couple of things: 1) it makes writing the bulletin much easier reduces the time it takes to produce 2) It focuses us on our committee projects, awards and fundraising activities –  the things we really want to share about our club.

To that end, we’d like to ask all committee chairs to give us a periodic report any time your committee does something of note. Please email an edited description of what your particular committee did or plans to do in Word format, to Layne Bowen.  A paragraph or two are probably all that’s needed. Photos are always great to enhance the story, so feel free to send those as well.  We can then simply cut and paste your story into an issue with ease.
