PROGRAM: Senator Mike McGuire

Mike McGuire

Mike McGuire

Mike’s District includes the richest county (Marin) and poorest (Lake) in California. In the past year, the district has faced several hardships: Lake County had a major fire disaster to go with their other economic, high unemployment and suicide rate and other problems. The Dungeness Crab season has been a disaster for coastal commercial fishing constituents. Other major issues are being faced in the rural counties include marijuana growers polluting rivers and streams and clearcutting forest land to grow pot. Cartels have increased their presence and violence has followed.

On a positive note, Lots of tax money is being collected by the state. Corporate taxes up 6.3% more this year. Property and individual tax collections are up. 10.2 billion dollars have been saved in the state’s rainy day fund. Recession era bonds are being paid off. In 2014, our schools slipped to 50th in $ per student. Now funding is available to get us up to 35th in per student spending – better, but still below what is needed. The Senator is for increasing career training at the high school level.

The Senator also discussed high speed rail, highway funding shortfalls and the need to get people out of their cars.  A spirited question and answer session followed.
