PROGRAM

Speaker

Captain Fosse of the US Coast Guard

This week we were honored to have Captain Fosse who is the commanding officer for the US Coast Guard’s Training Center at Two Rock.  Captain Fosse who has been in the USCG for 22 years, mainly on the east coast, but 10 years at sea with four of those years in command at sea. He has spent time at sea and in Washington DC.  He asked our student of the month if he would like to join the Coast Guard!

The beginnings of the Coast Guard was founded in 1790.  In 1915 it became the organization that it is now.  Its purpose is to protect those on the sea, the safety and security of US waters and protects the sea itself.  Two Rock was started as an army base back in 1942.  The 858 acres was bought from a local rancher for $94,000.  In 1971 the Coast Guard took over.  At any time there are 3500 – 4000 students at the training center.  Even though they are quite away from the Pacific Ocean, they do train for duty at sea.  With simulators and other education they can be ready to serve at sea.  The Coast Guard does search and rescue, keeps an eye out to stop drug smugglers, undocumented persons, vehicle buoyancy and pollution at sea.  They are on navy ships deployed around the world to fight piracy.  They help other countries build their own Coast Guard units.

The personnel at Two Rock volunteer over 5400 hours to the local community every year.  They have installed solar panels that cover 60% of the peak load.
