IN CONFLICT AREAS

Abigail Bridgman

Rotary Peace Fellow Nominee Abigail Bridgman was born and raised in Uganda where she earned a law degree at Makerere University before moving to the United States in December 2009. Ms Bridgman went to Empire College for a year to acquire the necessary credit units to enable her to take the California Bar. She also earned her LL.M in International Crime and Justice from The University of Turin, Italy.

Ms. Bridgman worked at the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office before moving on to work at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Ms. Bridgman is currently working for the Defense Team of Dominic Ongwen, a Ugandan former child soldier accused of war crimes at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. She also worked part time for the Oxford University Press and has taught a pre-college summer international law class at UC Berkeley for high school students.

Ms. Bridgman’s passion is the intersection of human rights and the criminal justice system and international law. She will be discussing the protection of children in armed conflict, drawing heavily on her current assignment.

Kera Smith of PG&E was our guest today along with Susan McKee, speaker David Gouin and our beloved former member Genie Delles.

RAFFLE

Keven Brown ran today’s raffle and had $154.00 to give away. Karen Ball, however failed to reach Raffle Nirvana and only walked away with $10.00.

SUNSHINE

Ginny Cannon reported that all is sunny in Santa Rosa! This writer noted, however that Casey D’Angelo was walking a little sideways after falling off his bike on Saturday in a freak accident. Poor guy was in obvious pain. Any chiropractors in the house?

ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Welcome back Bob Sorenson who lost his daughter and Doug Chase’s wife, Robbie. Welcome to Genie Delles, who has been missed the last few years. Bob thanked his Rotary family for the support he has received during this difficult time.
• Dan Shell presented his rousing rendition of “Casey At the Bat” with the help of Rich de Lambert in honor of the opening of baseball season.
• PP  Doug Johnson and his esteemed staff shared the progress of Giro Bello. Jeff Kolin is handling volunteer opportunities and shared those opportunities. Tim Delaney and Vanna McMillan shared some numbers related to Giro Bello. Kathleen Archer showed off the lovely blue Giro Bello 2017 rider jersey.
• Pete Lescure again asked for volunteers to help with club fellowship duties. For red badgers, being a greeter is one of the best ways to get to meet each of our club members!

        

PROGRAM

Jeff Kolin introduced today’s speaker, Santa Rosa’s Director of Housing and Community Services, David Gouin. Mr. Gouin described his departmental responsibilities at Housing and Community Services. He shared the accepted formula for what is considered affordable housing, which in Santa Rosa requires subsidies to make up the gap. In an expensive area such as Santa Rosa, that formula is skewed for low income households and requires a voucher system, tax credits and other tools to make housing more affordable. David talked about Santa Rosa’s Housing Action Plan that is intended to expedite the development of more housing including more “affordable” housing units in each development.

David also discussed the challenge of homelessness in Santa Rosa. The City of SR has invested $1.7 million in homeless services,  He described the new Housing first approach which is intended to get people off the street and into housing BEFORE treating their various health or issues with drugs, alcohol, etc…..
