RYE INBOUND AND OUTBOUND STUDENTS

Giordan Vilamoski; Chris Gullixson

RYE Inbound and Outbound Students

It is our great pleasure to welcome our Rotary Youth Exchange students on March 14th. The program will be moderated by Craig Meltzner.

Our inbound student is Giordan Vilamoski, who comes to us from Brazil. He attended Santa Rosa High School while here. His original host family lost their home in the fire, so he has relocated twice since then. Not quite the experience he was expecting when he arrived!

Our returning outbound student is Chris Gullixson. He had a wonderful year in Sweden. Both their power point presentations and perspectives will be informative and impressive. You will not want to miss this!

Opening Ceremonies

Pledge

The pledge was led, with only a minimum of banter, by Michael Moore

Reflection

Cecil Humes told the story of the 4-Way Test, which was originated during the depths of the Depression.  This link will give you all the details:  http://www.rotary5630.org/history-of-the-four-way-test/

Cliff Bernard Nuwakora from the Kampala Munyonyo Rotary Club in UgandaVisiting Rotarians

Jeanne Levin introduced George Batchelter from Santa Rosa East

Guests

Steve Olson introduced four high schoolers who were to receive help from the Jamison  Fund. They were: Sara Riddick and Manuel Arichiga from Elsie Allen HS and Dawn Stornetta and Helen Mills from Santa Rosa HS. Ray Giampoli introduced Sherrie Clark

Bill Rousseau introduced _____________and urged us all to vote for her as his successor.

Rick Allen introduced our speakers

Sunshine

Ginny Cannon reported that Eileen Carlisle’s brother, Bruce, had recently passed away.

Raffle

Michael Moore handled the raffle, again with a minimum of drama.  (Do we like the quiet Michael or the rowdy Michael?  Raise your hands.)  Sam McMillan had the lucky ticket but pulled the unlucky marble, and walked away with the $10 consolation prize.

Jokes

Cathy Vicini told the story of the Russian, the Mexican, and the Korean…..  (You had to be there.)

Dan Schell did a very entertaining but convoluted recitation, something about the Jabberwok

Casey Carter told us about the truth-seeking robot’s smack-down

Jamison Merit Awards

Steve Olson presented awards to four high schoolers, two from 4-H and two from FFA to assist in purchasing lambs to raise for the County Fair.  He also told of a number of other awards from the Jamison fund to further agricultural education in Sonoma County.  Wes Jamison left our club a wonderful legacy.

Birthdays

There were four March birthday boys present:  Rick Allen, Mark Burchill, Doug Johnson, and Larry Miyano.  The club sang them “Happy Birthday,” and all receive gift bags from Kim Murphy.

Rotarian of the Month

One of our club’s hardest working and dedicated members, Jack Atkin, received a well-deserved nod as our Rotarian of the Month for March.

Announcements

President Julia reminded us that there are no more “missed meeting” fines.

President Julia also announced that our club’s Fire Relief Fund had received a $19,000 donation from the Sonoma Valley Rotary Club Foundation’s Fire Relief Fund.

Jeff Kolin gave us a progress report on Giro Bello.  Ridership sign-ups are a bit ahead of last year, and we are 2/3 of the way to our sponsorship goals.  If you are thinking of sponsoring the GiroBello, now is the time to step up.

Ann Gospe reminded us that it takes a village, or at least many members of our club, to present a successful GiroBello.  Sign up sooner than later.

Jackie McMillan discussed the Rotary River Cruise in August of 2019.  The early sign-up discount ends soon.

Ray Giampaoli gave us an update on the raffle.  We still have a long way to go to reach our goal.  Nevertheless, the winner will be drawn on April 9 at Franchetti’s.

Sharing

Rich deLambert told a story about his grandma following sheep in order to get a free meal.

Program

Rick Allen introduced our speakers, telling us that their product was close to his heart.

Justin Peterson and Bijan Nafea from Medtronic presented information on their stents, and on a new treatment for high blood pressure.

Historical note:  Did you know that Medtronic’s Santa Rosa division began as a tiny local company in the 1990’s?  The original name was Arterial Vascular Engineering.  During their first few years, with only a handful of employees, they began perfecting the technology for their stents.  Once their stents were approved by the FDA, they began rapidly growing, and in 1999, were purchased by Medtronic for the princely sum of $3,700,000,000.
