Rotary Fire Recovery Small Business Grants, 18 Months Later

The October 2017 fires that devastated so many homeowners also had a significant impact on many small business owners.  The Rotary clubs in District 5130 rallied to raise funds and establish a small grant process to assist our community members recover.  A network of Rotarians collected the applications, met with the individuals, and made recommendations as to which to fund.  Today, some 18 months since the fires, we have assembled a panel of three fire survivors that not only lost their homes, but their home-based businesses as well.  Each received a grant from Rotary that was instrumental in their ability to re-establish their businesses.  Our panel includes, Linda Johnson, owner of a home based frame shop; Semra Erden, owner of Eloqeant U Marketing Solutions; and Scott Butler, owner of TigerKick.  Our panelists will tell their stories and how these grants aided their recovery and success.

Dr. Shari presided over today’s raffle which is $327.00. DG Barb was called to draw the winning ticket. She drew her own ticket, but was unable to draw the lucky marble.

Cathy’s a Clown

Cathy outdid herself today with a real groaner that was so not funny that she had to explain the punchline. It didn’t help!  Maybe it’s better when you read it……

The Wedding Ceremony:

The wedding ceremony came to the point where the minister asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom.

The moment of utter silence was broken when a beautiful young woman carrying a child stood up. She starts walking slowly towards the minister.

The congregation was aghast – you could almost hear a pin drop.

The grooms jaw dropped as he stared in at the approaching young woman and child.

Chaos ensued.

The bride threw the bouquet into the air and burst out crying.

Then the groom’s mother fainted.

The best men started giving each other looks and wondering how to save the situation.

The minister asked the woman, “Can you tell us, why you came forward?  What do you have to say? “
There was absolute silence in the church.
The woman replied, “We can’t hear you in the back!”

Rotaplast Presentation

Jerry Meshulam explained how Rotoplast changes the lives of children born with varying degrees of cleft pallet. Jerry then recognized Monica Morales who went with him to Bangladesh on a Rotaract mission. She and Jerry are planning the next trip to Columbia.

Champagne Auction

Tony and Doug used two bottle of bubbly they received at the District Conference to raise a little money for Rotary. These are beer guys, so champagne is pretty useless to them.

The champagne was awarded to our club at the District Conference for best attendance. Bill Hatcher paid $200 for the first bottle, and in heated bidding Ted Wilmsen outbid Dr. Shari for $300 with his money going to Rotary International. Not sure, but I think Tony and Doug split the money Hatcher paid to buy a few cases of Schlitz……. (Bill’s donation went to the local Foundation).

Program

Diane Moresi introduced former grade schoolteacher and Science and Environmental Education Consultant Mike Roa, to discuss science education in Sonoma County.

Mike runs the North Bay Science Challenge which is celebrating its 12th year. Mike started his work after his position at Sonoma County Office of Education was eliminated.  Mike talked about changes in California science standards, which were implemented in 1998 to Next Generation Science Standards, which were implemented in 2013 emphasizing data analysis rather than memorizing facts for standardized testing. Mike then shared information about various formal and non-formal science education in Sonoma County. Mike’s emphasis is in environmental education.

Mike showed photos of the North Bay Science Challenge which showed that some events were information based, such as a Jeopardy type game, while others were process based. Examples would be paper airplane building and flying and catapult building, with distance competition afterward. Divisions are grades 4-6 and grades 6-8. His program is a labor of love that he runs on his own without formal public education backing and serves to help young people learn and appreciate science.
