Antarctica / Patagonia Expedition

Doug Chase

Antarctica is the windiest, coldest, and driest place on earth. Its ice sheet is up to four miles thick and the continent contains 75 percent of the planet’s freshwater. In fact under the ice sheet is a freshwater lake the size of Lake Ontario. Climate change is melting the cap and contributes to a quarter of sea rise. A more immediate danger is the now mechanized fishing of polar krill which is the foundation Antarctic food source.

Come listen to Dr. Chase’s trip to Antarctica and Southern Patagonia with insights on what few people ever get to see with tens of thousands of penguins, shipwrecks, and tectonic plate mountains rising from a few hundred feet to 10,000 feet in minutes on the southern edge of south America rich with valley glaciers in the Chilean fiords. No seasickness bag is needed to attend.

Program:  Rotary Fire Recovery Small Business Grants, 18 Months Later

Jose Guillen led the conversation with Lynn Johnson and Semra Erden, two of the many people who got Rotary business grants after the October 2017 fires.  Linda lost her home and business.  Her business is custom picture framing. The grant allowed her to purchase the equipment she needed to get back in business.  Semra also ran her business, Eloquent u Marketing Solutions, from her home.  She lost everything so with the grant she was able to restart her business.
