The pros and cons of the Measure C will be focus of our meeting on May 10th. Few initiatives have generated so much press and strong opinion. As Press Democrat staff writer Kevin McCallum said in a March 20, 2017 article, “The June referendum vote on Santa Rosa’s rent control ordinance is shaping up to be an expensive – and likely lopsided-brawl”.
Two very special guests will present both sides of the issue, followed by a few pre-selected questions. President Jose Guillen will be our moderator. Please send your questions in advance of the meeting to him.
This will be another great meeting to invite a friend.

Ginny announced that Joy Parker’s husband Bob continues his recovery from a stroke and will soon be able to have visitors.
THE RAFFLE
Pete Lescure presided over the raffle and Matthew Henry was unable to select the winning marble but walked away with the $10 consolation prize.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Karen Ball came to the rescue and will lend her pop up tent for the New Gen Peacebuilders participating in the Human Race this weekend to promote their peace project “Plant Roots of Peace”
The Board met to discuss recommendations for eliminating fines for missed meetings, leaving early, and for 
simply having a birthday. The board discussed instead changing the dues structure to incorporate those occasional charges into the mix as well as meals similar to what other clubs do. It was recommended that the board solicit Club members for feedback.
ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH
Carolyn Fassi was awarded Rotarian of The Month. Congratulations Carolyn!
NEW MEMBER
El Presidente Jose inducted a new member David Berman who was immediately appointed to Giro Bello Committee and Pedal 4 Polio’s August event sponsored by incoming District Governor Bob Rogers.
FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Steve Olson and El Presidente Jose awarded scholarships to 6 outstanding SRJC students who are transferring to four year schools to continue their education. These fine students are already leaders and we can feel secure that our society is in good hands looking forward.
The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa Foundation will award eleven scholarships this year for a total value of $19,750. Six of this year’s recipients were introduced and presented with scholarship certificates at this week’s luncheon. The names of our outstanding scholarship winners are listed below along with their major, 4 year school choice and the scholarship each was awarded:

SORENSON-CHASE SCHOLARSHIP
Doug Chase gave the club an overview of the background of the Chase-Sorenson (Sorenson-Chase?) scholarship that honors both Doug’s parents and Bob Sorensen and his wife and Doug’s wife Robbie who passed away recently. These two families were friends and the fathers were colleagues at Cal Poly for decades. Their children Doug and Robbie later married and raised a family of their own. The Foundation Board donated $2,000 toward the fund which offered a scholarship in its first year.
PROGRAM
Ann Gospe introduced today’s guest speaker Malia Anderson. Malia was born and raised by her grandmother in the hood. No, she really means IN THE HOOD!” Bayview/Hunter’s Point to be exact. Both of Malia’s parents were drug addicts and her mother gave Malia to her grandmother to raise. Malia’s 
grandmother raised her own children as well as 6 grandchildren. At an early age, 12, Malia started becoming an entrepreneur. Imagining herself in the fashion world in major cities such as San Francisco and New York, she later found herself married to a man and living in a rural outpost called Santa Rosa. She has worked in the corporate world, but was always questioning everything and decided that she simply hated working for other people. Malia always loved fashion and after her first stroll down the runway was hooked. She found her niche in plus size fashion and has made a career of it. Malia has written for articles for national magazines such as Essence (they called her!), as well as many local and regional publications (Press Democrat, North Bay Bohemian, etc..) writes a blog and consults all over the place.
