Our Program For Wednesday, May 16, 2018

World Community Service Committee
Peter Holewinski

On May 16th our club will call attention to one of the reasons we are called Rotary International.  WCS members will highlight the projects our committee has chosen to support in this Fiscal Year.  We have sponsored our own Global Grant and helped support other club’s grants as well.  Our allocations are both large and small. Some are complete and some still in process. All make a very big difference in the lives of individuals around the world.

WCS Committee chair Peter Holewinski will facilitate the program.

Completed projects include:

  1. Project Amigo – 25% of our budget each year to Colima, Mexico
  2. Tanzania bridge construction
  3. Water filters to Puerto Vallarta Area remote villages
  4. Project Peanut Butter in various African villages
  5. Guatemalan student scholarship – 7th year commitment

Program

Letitia Hanke thought she’d grow up to be a professional musician, but instead ended up working at and later owning her own roofing company.

Letitia shared her childhood experience of being bullied and called names. A music teacher found her hiding from bullies and took her under her wing to teach her trumpet. As she progressed, Letitia joined the high school band and became the “cool kid”. Her high school friends stuck up for her against the bullies and she became a happy child.

As she learned the roofing business, she was encouraged to get a contractor’s license and start her own business. As she grew her business, she started a foundation to help kids get into the trades. She started the Lime Foundation which runs a number of programs. One, called Nextgen Trades Academy at Rancho Cotati HS, is a vocational training program that shows kids how a career in the trades can earn them good money. Turner Arts Initiative is another project that awards scholarships for kids in the performing arts. Senior Activity Program is another program that encourages seniors to eat well and exercise.

Letitia was an inspirational speaker and has a spirit that would make her a wonderful Rotarian.
