Raffle to raise money for fire relief:

We have an ambitious goal of selling 20,000 raffle tickets at $25.00 a piece to fund unmet needs of the fire survivors.

The District has set up a new committee of 12 to manage the funds collected for this fire relief effort; 4 from Sonoma, 4 from Napa, 2 from Mendocino and 2 from Lake Counties. We will use the LARCA Fund set up for the Valley Fire of 2 years ago, but those who manage the LARCA funds will not be in control of this money…. the 12 committee members will manage the funds.  The goal is 1 million!  The funds will go to the unmet needs such as renters who did not have renter’s insurance, undocumented workers who have lost jobs and homes, small business grants, etc.  Doug Johnson will get us a flyer to share with everyone we know.

Joke of the week….maybe two!

Cathy Vicini had assistance this week.  First up was Jock McNeill, “Have you ever had zebra meat?  The meat is dark, then light, then dark, then light…………..”

Next up was Don McMillan with this story….  Two friends go into a bar with a dog.  The one friend said, “We cannot go in there with my dog.”  The other friend said, “Pretend you are blind and the dog is your service dog.”  So they go into the bar and the bartender says, “Dogs are not allowed.”  The friend says, “But it is a service dog.”  The bartender says, “It is a Chihuahua!”  The dog owner says, “You mean they gave me a Chihuahua?”

Craft Talk:  Diane Moresi interviews Sam McMillan

Sam was born in Santa Rosa in 1945.  He grew up on his family’s poultry farm on Old Redwood Highway (now Santa Rosa Avenue).  Besides growing up in an agricultural family, he also got active in 4H and FFA as he was growing up.  He played the string bass….his mom was quite the musician!  Along the way he met Rotarians Joseph Walters and Wes Jameson who influenced him in his agricultural activities (and Rotary).  He won awards and spent I school year in Morocco.  Two years in the army at Fort Leavenworth, SRJC, and Heald College came next.  He met Rita and they were married in 1973. They have 3 children and 5 grandchildren.   In 1996 his friend, Steve Olson introduced him to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa.  Sam has for many years been managing the Wayside Garden Mobile Home Park on Santa Rosa Avenue…..which is part of the old family poultry farm.

Announcements:

Mark Burchill talked briefly about the Rotary Means Business fellowship and how it is attracting members from around the world.

Bill Rousseau has property tax forms and change of address forms for those Rotarians that have lost their home.

Karen Ball announced that if any Rotarians need a place for Thanksgiving, she and Dennis are opening their home.  Just let her know how many are coming.

Guest speaker, Karrisa Kruse

Karrisa came this time to talk about the state of the crush and the fires.  We now have about 58,235 acres of vineyards in Sonoma county; 6% of the county.  There are about 1800 vineyard owners and 495 wineries.  70% of those wineries make less than 6000 cases a year.  BUT, they bring 13.4 billion into our economy each year and encompass 54,287 jobs.

Mother Nature did not seem so nice when we had the 115 degree Labor Day weekend.  The heat spike got the grapes ready to pick much faster than expected.  By the time the fires started 90% of all the grapes had been picked.  Those grapes still on the vine were cabernet and syrah that have really tough skins.  A little fire and smoke is not going to cause them harm. The vineyards were a natural fire break throughout the counties.  We have all driven around and seen destruction right next to an intact vineyard.  Young vines did burn as well as vineyards that had burning trees fall into them.  Paradise Ridge was the most notable structural victim of the fires.  The Vintner’s Inn probably survived because someone was smart enough to turn on the irrigation system, but houses all around burned to the ground.

The biggest concern is the approximately 950 vineyard workers that have been left homeless.  The wine community is looking for ways to help their employees through this rough time.

Other Business – New Member!

Rotary first lady and studio artist Rose Frances has applied and has been approved for membership in our club. Welcome, Rose!
