The musical arts are alive and well in a spectacular new Sonoma County home

Initial performances were so well received, that the fledgling group moved to the 1000-seat Santa Rosa High School auditorium, where they remained for more than half a century. Santa Rosa—became a reality, the Symphony moved again and remained until the fall of 2012 when it became the Green Music Center’s Resident Orchestra, to be heard as never before and to continue to build the North Bay’s reputation as a premiere cultural destination. The guest speaker at the November 28th Rotary meeting will be Jessica Anderson, the Associate Director of Communications for the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University.

OPENING CEREMONIES

It was a welcome sight to see returning Club President Bill Rousseau at the podium, along with a crowd of visitors on his right hand. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Our “Silent Rotarian” Robbie Fouts found his voice in the words of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. His brief address took place four months after the end of the Civil War, on the dedication of the war’s bloodiest battle. Robbie read Lincoln’s two-minute speech. The text of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address can be found at the end of this week’s Santa Rosarian.

VISITING ROTARIAN

Stopping by to give us more support in our membership campaign was District Membership Chair, Chris Parr Feldman, to give us our team assignments for the 2012-13 membership drive. OK, Chris, thanks for the boost and the motivation. We’re on it, but stop by again soon.

Vice Chair of our Rotary Club’s Youth in Agriculture program, Past President Steve Olson introduced the club’s guests from Future Farmers of America chapters: Becky Beniz and Eduardo Barraza from Elsie Allen High School and from Santa Rosa High School—Dawn Stornetta, Wesley Hunt, Kayla Bowerman, and Angie Law were welcomed to the Rotary Club meeting today at today’s luncheon meeting at St. Rose along with Steve Knudsen from the Sonoma County Farm Bureau, Herb Wilmsen, and Clem Carinalli, who serves on the Wes Jamison Endowment Fund.

Wednesday morning’s live webinar session updating Rotary International’s Secretary General top five priorities for Rotary

was recorded and is available on the RI website to view and share. During the webinar, in addition to John’s updates on End Polio Now, Future vision, Rotary Club Central, Membership, the Secretary General will also respond to questions and you will learn about new Rotary initiatives.

 THE JAMISON FUND

Managed by the local foundation of the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa and operating under the guidance of a committee of Wes Jamison’s former students and his niece Marilyn Herzog. The Agriculture Departments of Santa Rosa and Elsie Allen High Schools are eligible to apply for Jamison Grants each year. This year the Jamison Fund will be awarding a total of $2,000 to three projects. The Elsie Allen High School Ag Department, represented by FFA member Eduardo Barraza and Ag teacher Becky Deniz was presented with a check in the amount of $400 to help cover the cost of field

trips to local farms, ranches, and agri-businesses. The Santa Rosa High School Ag Department receives two grants: Ag teacher Wesley Hunt and FFA Member Kayla Bowerman will received a check for $725 to purchase equipment for use by students raising rabbits to show at the Sonoma County Fair, and Ag Teacher Dawn Stornetta and FFA Member Angie Law will receive a check for $875 to purchase equipment to be used by students preparing their lambs to be shown at the Sonoma County Fair.

Jamison Fund scholarship winners

The Agriculture Departments of both local high schools received congratulations for doing such an outstanding job of educating our community’s students for future careers in agriculture. Steve Olson reminded us that Wes Jamison began teaching agriculture at SRHS in 1930 and expressed gratitude to see his groundbreaking work still continuing 82 years later. The Jamison Fund continues to grow, thanks to generosity of many former students, family, friends and Rotarians.

ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH

Rotarian of the Month Debi Zaft

Past President Debi Zaft accepted more accolades—and a bouquet of flowers—from President William for her great work in making the club’s on-going fundraising efforts not only a great success but an exciting and enjoyable social event for fellow Rotarians and guests. For all her hard work and dedication to Casino Royale’s fundraising success, Debi was named Rotarian of the Month for October. Congratulations, Debi, and thanks for  great party.

FUTURE CLUB LEADERSHIP

President William announced the nominees for club officers to become part of President-elect Peggy Soberanis’ cabinet for the 2013-14 Rotary Year: New Board members will be Doug Johnson, Cathy Vicini, Jack Tolin, and Deborah Smith. The President-elect nominee for the 2015-16 Rotary Year will be Jose Guillen, who has made such an impact on our Rotary Club in less than three years as a member. The club will entertain additional nominees from the club membership. Nominations will be closed at the next club meeting on November 28thwith nominees and a vote of the membership will be called at that time.

YOUNG ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR

Carmen Sinigiani, back from her sojourn to New York City’s hurricane disaster, officially received her District 5130 Plaque from President Bill naming her the District Young Rotarian of the Year.

RAFFLE JACKPOT GROWTH

Slowly recovering from Deborah Gray’s raid two weeks ago, the pot was $53 this week. Guest Marilyn Herzog’s ticket was drawn but the Lucky Joker eluded her. The Big Jackpot is back on the rise.

SUNSHINE REPORT

Club members warmly welcomed back long-time Rotarian Kim Murphy on her way to full recovery from her medical adventures with skin cancer and reconstructive surgery. Kim contributed $100 to her Paul Harris Fellowship and shared her advice to fellow Rotarians to be aware of the dangers of skin cancer and maintain regular visits to our favorite dermatologist. Dick Jenkins is still on the slow road to recovery from his back problems, recuperating at home, where he still enjoys calls from his Rotary friends.

ROTARIAN VETERAN’S SPECIAL

Last week’s Veterans Day Edition of The Santa Rosarian was filled with great photographs, thanks to our volunteer photographers, Carrie Ludtke & Kris Anderson. Editor Jim Johnson thanked them both publicly for photographic coverage of the Veterans Day recognition at the Memorial Auditorium’s record-setting turnout.

After two long weeks on the Big Island of Kona, Matt Everson finally returned to contribute $50 to his Paul Harris Fellowship.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Redwood Empire Food Bank: John McHugh organized a hands-on project this Thursday evening  and 15 Rotarians gathered at the warehouse to pack up boxes of food for low-income seniors. The crew jumped right in and in less than 45 minutes 216 boxes of food were packages, sealed, and stacked for delivery. Participating in this impromptu Rotary endeavor were John McHugh, Mark Burchill, Ginny Cannon, Jack Abercrombie, Vickie Hardcastle, Robert Pierce, Kris Anderson, Carmen Sinigiani (& sons), Joy & Bob Parker, Ryan Thomas (& daughter), Jeff Gospe (& family) Bob Sorensen, Dan Walker, Craig Meltzner and Rick Allen. Great work was accomplished by this group of hearty volunteers.

Carrie Ludtke asks for your help. She is responsible for shopping for the children’s gifts for our annual Nutcracker Suite Christmas Party project for disadvantaged kids. Volunteer to help via email or give her a call. She’s listed in the Club Roster. Remember that Carrie & husband Josh are wonderful to work with and great references when in need.

Wayne Rowland’s big turkey party is this Sunday. You should know the drill by now. Admission to his Thanksgiving Turkey Party are two frozen turkeys that will become Thanksgiving Dinner from The Salvation Army and the Redwood Gospel Mission for those in need. That’s all day this Sunday, November 18th, at his home at 909 Quarry Pointe. For more information check out the event our Rotary events calendar online.

Rotary’s Monthly Social Nov. 29th at Eileen’s: The occasion is a barbeque of leftover pork & lamb from the club’s purchase of pork and lamb from the Sonoma County Fair Auction. Sam McMillan and Steve Olson will do the honors at Eileen Carlisle’s beautiful home on Happy Valley Road starting about 5:30 pm. Go to Rotary’s website for more details, but bring your favorite refreshments and snacks.

Past President Kathleen Archer found a local young family in need for Thanksgiving. She estimated that $200 for Thanksgiving dinner would be a big blessing. Jack Tolin’shat went around the room and was soon filled with $340 to fund a special Thanksgiving boost.

LINCOLN AT GETTYSBURG

With Stephen Spielberg’s long-awaited historical motion picture about Abraham Lincoln’s final months receiving so much attention this month, Robbie Fouts’ focus on Lincoln’s remarkable address to the huge crowd gathered toward the end of the a bloody Civil was appropriate. The dedication of the equally-bloody battleground near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, featured several famous orators of the time and only a few words by the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who read a few notes he had jotted down on the back of an envelope. Those few words have become one of the best-known speeches in American history:

THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS

“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

“Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

“But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
