THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WILL HAYMAKER

Tony Roehrick gave us a Craft Talk for Will Haymaker. Here it is in its entirety:

“It is my pleasure to reintroduce Will Haymaker to the members of the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa.  I got to know will through our service on the International Committee some ten years ago when I first joined this club.  Early on, I considered Will to a role model for his dedication to the international community, especially Project Amigo.  He certainly embodies our motto of Service Above Self.

Will was born in his family home in Winona Lake, Indiana on December 12, 1929.  He recalls it as a cold and stormy day.  In 1931, Will’s family moved to Lenoir, North Carolina where his father worked at a local bank.  He attended high school in that community.  Will received a full scholarship through the Navy at Purdue University.  He graduated in June 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Will then began immediate active duty aboard the USS Estes, a flagship and was sent to the Marshall Islands Bikini Lagoon.  It was here that Will was part of a team that exploded the very first hydrogen bomb.  He came back a year later and was a part of four additional H-bomb tests.  During one test, his ship inadvertently came sideways to the blast which resulted in their heeling over 38 degrees.  On another test, they were peppered with radioactive material when the wind suddenly shifted.  This resulted in readings in the millions below decks.  They were able to rid the ship of the material.  The remaining officers continue to refer to themselves as the Glow in the Dark Society.  Fortunately, no one suffered any long-term issues.  During his time in the Navy, Will earned the nickname Buddha. Will’s military career also included stops in Korea in 1954 and Vietnam in 1955, both before the fighting had broken out.

After his service, Will joined Lockheed Aircraft in 1955 as a Sales Engineer.  He sold Constellation propellers and Electra turboprops to Pacific Southwest Airlines.  Several years later, he joined Motorola as Western Regional Sales Manager.  Will’s territory covered 13 states and 3 sales offices for their Control Systems Division.  Clients included big utility and oil companies.  It was during this period that Will won the job of supplying the electronic instrumentation for the first computer controlled oil refinery for Mobil Oil in Torrance, CA.  He considers this the highlight of his professional career.  He also supplied Motorola instrumentation for Chevron Oil’s unattended Fleet Fueling Stations. Some years later, Will started his own company, Dataguard Systems, Inc. that served as a manufacturing rep and consultant.  He received his real estate license in 1978.

Will is married to JoAnne who he met in 1970.  Both were going through a divorce and met at a class called Marriage on the Rocks.  Will’s two children were in Joanne’s Sunday School class at the Unitarian Church in Terra Linda.  They were married on October 29 1972 at their home in Lucas Valley with their 4 children and many friends in attendance.

Will joined the Terra Linda Rotary Club in 1976, just as they had voted to integrate women into Rotary.  He recalls that a few men dropped out.  He was asked to that club’s President in 1992, but declined since he was moving to Oakmont.  This is was when he joined the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa.  Will recalls that he became a real Rotarian upon his travel to Mexico at the onset of Project Amigo.  Will has taken his kids and grandchildren to serve at Project Amigo in the intervening years so they could gain new perspectives on culture and service.  Will served as this Club’s president during the 2002-2003 year. Editor’s note: Will was famous for his “ALOHA!”greeting at the start of every meeting.

Will considers Rotary the ideal place for him to fulfill his lifelong goal of Service to Others.  His future goals are to remain active in Rotary causes such as world peace.  He is also interested in working towards delivering affordable housing in Sonoma County.

Fellow Rotarians, please join me in recognizing Will Haymaker for his tremendous service, both as a veteran and as a Rotarian.”
