SRJC INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS — CCI PROGRAM
International Students

srjc-studentsA special group of international students has arrived at Santa Rosa Junior College, one of 14 campuses across 11 states, to begin the 2016-2017 Community College Initiative (CCI) Program. CCI is a program of the U.S. State Department that provides participants with quality educational study at U.S. community colleges and is designed to build technical skills, enhance leadership capabilities, and strengthen English language proficiency.

Audrey Le Baudour, Program Coordinator for the CCI program also recognizes the impact that CCI students have on Sonoma County during their 11-month stay. “In addition to obtaining a certificate in their individual disciplines, each student volunteers a minimum of 125 hours within our community and participates in an unpaid internship of at least 75 hours.

We are fortunate to have 3 of these students presenting to our Rotary Club on November 16th. They are Angelica Hinestroza and Samuel M. Perilla Ch. from Columbia and Hermes ADJE  from the Ivory Coast. They will be telling our members about themselves, their country, their experience and what they hope to do when they return to their countries.

PROGRAM

Retired Sebastopol educator John Namkung shared his experience volunteering to help refugees fleeing the war armed conflict in Syria. After following the ongoing flight of refugees from the Middle East, John felt that he needed to do something to help, not just be a bystander to the misery of others. He shared his experience, flying to Greece to assist at a refugee camp. He arrived and was immediately put to work helping serve food to refugees.  John noted that many of the refugees were professional people who were traveling with their families to escape the horrors of the war.  He befriended some of these people and shared how he helped to get a particular family by making trips into town to get a wheel repaired on a carriage, a small thing seemingly, but extremely important to the family he was helping.  John shared many images of the squalid conditions

of the refugee camp and the hardships faced by those fleeing the conflict area. Finally, John related that a particular person had he befriended during his time in Greece he had contacted him from the Netherlands, which he somehow reached.

John currently volunteers with the International Rescue Committee, an agency funded by the U.S. government to assist with the resettlement of refugees in the United States. He serves as a Family Mentor to newly-arrived refugees to the Bay Area.

The meeting was adjourned with a moment of silence for Kris Anderson’s father, Gus.
