Program

Rotarians Don McMillan, John Poremba and Kim Murphy shared the experience of participating in the Rotary International golf tournament held at Scottish golf mecca St. Andrews. More recently, Don spent the last 5 weeks hiking in France and Spain. Don donated $50 to the John Brown scholarship fund. Diane Moresi bid $30 for a chocolate bar Don claims to have carried all over Europe.

Don then shared his experience playing golf at a Rotary fundraiser that included a round at the Old Course at St. Andrews. Don told a humorous story of how he ended up at St. Andrews at 2:30 am by mistake.

After his round at St. Andrews, Don picked up John Poremba, Kim Murphy and her hubs Dewayne. They toured Loch Lomond and the world renowned McMillan family heritage site. They followed up with rounds of golf at other Loch Lomond area courses.

They happy group then descended upon St. Andrews, where they were greeted by a pipe band. John played to a net 71 at St. Andrews. He was one of 9 golfers in the world to qualify for something or other.

John and Kim reflected on their experience playing in the Rotary Golf Tournament. John stated that this was the best golfing experience of his life. John also shared Don’s mad Scottish driving skills, stories of Old Tom Morris and the experience of teeing off in front of dozens of tourists with cameras. Kim Murphy shared her experience of dragging off a red-eye plane flight and directly on to 36 holes of golf, walking every hole. Kim enjoyed playing golf with the men and made the 2nd cut. Kim won “quote of the day” when she described the trip as “National Lampoon’s Golf Vacation” and felt blessed to be a part of it. John credited Don with organizing everything from Tee times to housing accommodations and his wife, Judy for encouraging him to go.

Message From Bob Rogers: As Promised, Ideation Results from May’s District Conference – 2nd Installment

Dear Rotary Club of Santa Rosa,

Education in Developing Countries

Last month I sent you the Ideation results on the first two of the 8 Ideation subjects…Educating Children to be Better Citizens and Attracting New Members for Clubs.

This month, as promised, I’m sending you the results of second set of two subjects…Rotary’s Relevance in the Future (click hereand Access to Education in the Developing World (click here) .

It it hoped that one of these ideas might spark enough interest in your club to end up becoming a new and exciting project for your members.

Rotary’s Relevance

One thing…actually, two things, that caught my attention in the Access to Education in the Developing World document, were the ideas of a club, or a school (Think Interactors) sponsoring a school in a developing country with supplies, scholarships, etc., and the benefit of connecting our kids with kids in those schools via the “pen pal” route. This is something one of our clubs did a few years back with a school in Kenya they built a library for…that is…connecting our middle school Interactors with their counterparts in Kenya via the new internet connection that was provided as part of their new library.  From what I heard, the kids loved being able to converse back and forth with students half way around the world.

Lots of other ideas in these two documents as well.  Please take the time to read them, and perhaps discuss with your community service folks, both local and international.   Who knows what doors may open up for your club.

Remember, these ideation sessions consisted of Rotarians, In-bound and Out-bound Youth Exchange Students, Rotaractors, and Rotex Members, all collaborating together in this process. Join in, take these ideas and make them fly!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Bob
