ROTARY MEANS BUSINESS MINUTE

Shannon McConnell works for Sonic.net. They are now offering phone service. She is looking for businesses that have 10 or more employees that depend on their internet running at all times with no interruptions. Sonic.net is one of the 3 largest Internet providers in California.

ROTARY EDUCATION MINUTE

Nominations are coming up for the next year’s board members and the president nominees for the next few years. President Mark Burchill explained who was on the nominating committee and how they first meet in September/October to select potential nominees and ask them to serve. It is finalized in late October and brought before the membership at the second meeting in November. Anyone that would like to serve can let the nominating committee know in advance or announce which board position they are interested in at that November meeting. The official vote of the club is at the 3rd meeting in November. So think about it, volunteer and be ready to vote!

SUGGESTIONS AND GRIPES

President Mark wanted to remind everyone that if you have a suggestion or gripe, please let him know. If you want to be anonymous, that is OK….put it in the suggestion box.

WHO (did you say was going to be our next president?)

Due to the County of Sonoma coming up with some money for a new courthouse, Jose Guillen who was supposed to be the president elect, has to put it off because of the pending work load that he will have spending the money. So in a brilliant decision by those involved, Jose will switch with Doug Johnson who is the president elect nominee for the following year. Since it really is hard to tell them apart, this should workout really well. Jose indicated (tongue in cheek) that he had already hired an interpreter for his year and we can now keep the person on for Doug’s year! Love these boys!

WELCOME STEVE DUNN!

President Mark introduced new club member Steven Dunn. Steve is the head of the local Boy Scouts. I cannot wait to hear more about “historical fencing.” Perhaps he can give us a demonstration one meeting!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

We have 3 bocce teams for this Saturday’s District Bocce Tournament. At next week’s meeting we will hear how our teams did. There is some money being wagered!

Vickie Hardcastle reminded us all that we only have until Friday October 31st to make a Paul Harris donation and have it matched. Matching donations are for $100 – $300. Also the Foundation dinner will be Saturday November 8th at the Hilton Hotel here in Santa Rosa.

Sam McMillan got most of the lamb and pork from this year’s county fair auctioned off at the social last week. However, there is still more. Please check with him to see what is available.

Julia Parranto is taking sign-ups for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing. We will be working the 2nd and 3rd weekends in December at CVS and Safeway.

Yale Abrams announced that donating blood is now a Hands-On Committee activity. If you donate blood, let him know and your name will go into a drawing.

Nick Knickerbocker says we have 60 more tickets to sell for the Veteran’s Day program on November 6th. Buy one for yourself and buy one, or more, for a Sonoma County Veteran. Tickets are $15. Download the flier for the Veteran’s Luncheon!

Don McMillan thanked the the volunteers who helped at the Pillow Fights and at the YMCA golf tournament. Also, the first meeting of the 2015 Giro Bello committee is meeting on Friday, October 24th at the Dutton Avenue Rosso’s location. If you missed this meeting, let him know and you will be kept in the loop for future meetings.

Jim Johnson wanted us all to know he is moving to 4134 Spring Creek Drive, Santa Rosa. He says it takes him 12 minutes to walk to the meeting in the day light, but 1.5 hours in the dark. He would appreciate a ride when possible.

Noah Beecher and Ashlee Hollen from the Santa Rosa Evening Club invited us to the Second Annual Heidi Zimmer Memorial Rotary Foundation Chili Cook Off. It will be on Friday November 14th at the Scottish Rite Hall, 600 Acacia Lane in Santa Rosa. $20 registration to be a cook (you need to make 12 quarts of chili) or $25 at the door to come eat. Download the flier for the Chili Cook Off!

It was announced that we were $784 short for the $3500 matching funds for the John Brown Scholarship. But, fellow Rotarians came through and we got it!

PROGRAM

Today’s guest speaker was Karissa Kruse with the Sonoma County Winegrowers. Karissa gave us some fascinating facts about our wine growing area and talked about how well the combination of growers, wineries and tourism is really helping our county stand out. The wine growing and wineries bring in 13.4 billion dollars income to our county. The industry employs 54,297 people….1 in every 3 people in Sonoma county work in the industry.

Still only 6.4% of the acreage of the county is planted in grapes. 49% is natural habitat, 36% is pasture and 9% is urban.

Chardonnay is the top producing grape at 27% but cabernet and pinot noir are right behind at 20% each.

84% of all visitors to Sonoma County will visit at least one winery. The partnership of growers + vintners + tourism has enabled them to share resources and really promote in a way that we really get noticed. Sonoma County was selected as the #1 wine region in the United States last year and #2 in the world.

The other project that the wineries and growers are working on is 100% sustainability by 2019 and be the first region in the world to do so. Their motto is “Sonoma County, Sustainable Then. Now. Forever. By sustainable they mean to be environmentally sound, economically feasible and socially equitable.
