ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE CHAIR DISTRICT 5130
Petaluma Sunrise Rotary

Greg Freitas has been a Rotarian since 1980 and has served in many roles at both the Club and District

Level including being a Past President of his club, A founding director of RYLA, District Secretary, Assistant Governor and multiple year District Awards Chair.  Greg is a Major Donor with the Rotary International Foundation

Greg has served as the District Rotary Friendship Exchange program Chair (RFE) and often as the Team Leader since its start in 2014.  Our first RFE exchange was with Rotary district 3060 in Gujarat India.

A Rotary Friendship Exchange is an international exchanges program between two Districts for Rotarians and Rotary couples. Teams of 8 to 12 people have gone to visit each other’s districts,

staying in the homes of Rotarians for several days at a time and traveling around to visit

local Rotarians and their clubs.  Local clubs help plan the visitation Itineraries for each visiting team.

Our district has now done exchanges with India District 3060, New Zealand District 9930, and French District 1700.  A French team is coming to visit us next Spring and Host clubs are being requested to participate throughout our district and plan for their visit.

Greg will offer a slide show of our recent RFE visit(s), explain this exciting program and take questions on the opportunities this exchange program offers to local Rotarians.

Sunshine

Ginny Canon announced that Jack Geary was back today.   Ginny was sad to announce that Roy Thylin passed away Monday morning. We will all miss him and being welcomed by him every week.  Vicky Hardcastle announced that her husband was diagnosed with cancer. We offer Vicky our love and support as she and her husband face his illness together.

Raffle

$144 was in today’s pot failed to draw the winning marble. The blue marble was picked by a prospective member who drew the money marble! Congratulations!

Matthew Henry

Rio Ray needs to fill a table for a Salvation Army kick-off breakfast for the annual Bell Ringing campaign.  He has tickets to give any Rotarian that wants to attend.

Doug Chase announced to send him any short (1-2 minute) videos or high resolution photos to be used for web site and social media Club promotions.

Steve Olson shared more information about our old friend John Brown. He was a Rotary trivia buff who led the Rotary Trivia Contest team. Please help fund the John Brown memorial Scholarship which awards scholarship money to veterans.

Sam McMillan thanked everyone who came to the meat auction social at the Crane Melon Barn. He reported that he still has meat in his truck. Hope it’s not laying out on his pickup truck bed in the sun! 😉

Paul Hamilton encouraged ticket purchases for the upcoming veteran’s program. Buy one for you and one for a vet!

Jeff Gospe is looking for a host family for our exchange student Laurentius Ardie Martano after his own family is done weirding him out about American households! Return him to normalcy, please! He is currently attending Santa Rosa High School.

Pete Lescure announced that he is looking for someone to recruit club members the November meeting jobs. 

Jackie McMillan thanked those who attended their going away party on Sunday an gave special thanks to Rick Allen for his friendship and kind words. Jackie also has tickets for the remaining Marin Speaker Series for anyone interested as she and Don will be leaving the area in a couple weeks.

For World Polio Day, a short video was shown featuring a Rotaract visit to India to help immunizing children for polio.  Thank you to returning club member Mary Graves for providing the video. 

Dan Balfe discussed his experience 10 years ago in India to give polio vaccine to children. He told of how polio victims were housebound because their parents were ashamed of them. Dan challenged the 1st 10 who raise their hand to donate $50 to polio he would match their donation. $2,250 was raised today!

Craft Talk

Next door neighbor Gary Vice was the subject of Ryan Thomas’ craft talk. Gary’s parents came to Sebastopol from Missouri. Gary attended Santa Rosa High, where legend has it, he starred in 3 sports. His letterman sweater still hangs in the display case on campus!  He was voted the best athlete in Santa Rosa in 1958. Gary then went to Cal, partied too much and then came back to SRJC. He then attended and graduated San Jose State where by most accounts, he partied less and studied more. Gary returned to SR and worked for the accessor’s office for a number of years before working for, then buying a local appraisal firm. Gary became an active Rotarian in the mid 1970’s. Gary’s son Darrell was also a star baseball player for Cal and played in the CWS. Gary has 3 sons and a daughter and his friend and life partner Nancy Latham.

Paul Harris Recognition

Paul Harris recognition was given today to Jack Abercrombie by Kim Graves.

Program

Kris Rebillot, Director of Communications for The Buck Institute for Research on Aging presented today’s program.

The mission is to end the threat of age-related disease and to extend a healthy lifespan by a decade. The institute is the only one in the world focused exclusively on the biology of aging. The Buck Institute employs over 200 employees from around the world. The desire is to prevent or delay the diseases that are all associated with aging. She noted that rather than making people live forever, the goal is to extend healthy lives for an additional decade or more.  There are 20 labs at the Buck, each focusing in a specific discipline in studying different aspects of aging and disease.
