Cathy’s Foole Moment

One day, a farmer walked into a bar and asked the bartender for the strongest thing in the bar. “What’s wrong, fella?” asked the bartender. ”Some things you just can’t explain.” ”Try me.” ”

Okay. I was milking my cow this morning and I filled the bucket clear to the top. Then the dumb cow knocked it down with her left leg, so I grabbed some string and tied her left leg up. Then I milked her again and the stupid cow knocked it down with her right leg. So I grabbed some string and tied up her right leg. I then milked her again and the cow knocked it down with her tail. But this time I was out of string, so I decided to use my belt, so I tied it up with my belt. Just then my pants fell down and my wife walked in.”

“You’re right,” said the bartender. “Some things you just can’t explain.”

Announcements

Dan Balfe – our club was acknowledged at the District brunch on Sunday. Both President Tony and Peggy Sobranis won prizes for their polio donation.

Fred Levin announced this is the last day to buy tickets for the Veterans program. Buy one for you and one for a vet!

PP Julia still has hats for purchase for $25.

Sam McMillan still has some meat for sale from the meat auction.

Then the meeting took an immediate left turn when President Tony shared a rather disturbing candy video.

Recognitions

Mark B. and Diane Moresi were awarded with SC Fair hats for being the leading purchasers at the meat
Auction. Mark was then recognized for his multiple vacation to Southern CA and New York. Mark donated some items for auction. Kim Murphy bid $40 and Mark contributed $50 each to the club and foundation.

Sam McMillan was recognized fir a new grandson and donated $100 to baby Waylon’s PH.

Casey donated $100 for the birth of Harris Casey in the parking kot of the hospital in Denver.

Paul Hamilton announced he’ll donate $250 to FFA in honor of his friend George who passed away.

Ted Wilmsen donated $50 to the club to celebrate a pleasant visit with friends in Mendocino.

Doug Johnson celebrated the Red Six WS victory with a donation of $119 to his Paul Harris.

Shari Shamsavari visited New York and brought back an MLB Yankees baseball and 3 beautiful chocolate bars. Sold to Steve Olson for $35.00!

Instant Paul Harris

Debi Zaft assisted Tony as Steve Olson, Casey Carter, Judy Glenn and Doug Johnson were winners of consolation wine gifts.

Judy came back to win the instant Paul Harris. She won last time, so she donated the Instant Paul Harris back to award another winner. It happened again – Ray Giampaoli has already won it, soooooo…….he too donated it back! Sam McMillan who wins everything else apparently hadn’t already won this award already. Finally, a winner! 

Program

Shari Shamsavari introduced today’s speaker, Greg Freitas. Greg has been a Rotarian for 35 years, currently in Petaluma. His wife Lilli is also an active Rotarian. Today, Greg talked about the Rotary Friendship Exchange which he considers the finest program for everyday Rotarians. Exchanges are coordinated at the district level and reflect the interests and preferences of the participants. It’s not necessarily a vocational exchange, but can have that element if the participants desire it.

Participants stay with Rotarians in the country they visit which reduces cost and increases understanding of how people there live. This is a great way to experience the culture of the country. Greg showed slides from past trips to India, New Zealand and France.

Last spring, a team of 10 people visited southern France, and Greg shared a video of that trip. The French Rotarians who hosted Greg’s group will visit Sonoma County in return.

Greg asked our club to think about becoming a host to the French contingent of 10 people. He also asked us to think about participating in the next trip, location to be determined, possibly Japan.

Remembering Roy Thylin

It is always difficult when a fellow Rotarian passes away because we miss the person and can’t help but reflect back on our relationship with them and what they meant to Rotary. Roy Thylin was small in stature and one of the quietest men I have ever met. He let his actions speak for him and in this way he built a legacy in Rotary that will not soon be forgotten. Roy was a “numbers guy” and no task was too small or too large to tackle. When he did a fiscal analysis you could count on it being timely, complete and accurate. He was a Rotarian you could count on and has certainly left his mark on the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa.

One way to honor Roy’s memory is to make a contribution to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa Foundation “Legends Fund’. Please join me in making a contribution in Roy’s memory and acknowledge his many contributions to Rotary.
