Friends of Trione Annadel State Park

Dan Stamps

“Friends of Trione Annadel State Park”

Friends of Trione Annadel State Park (FoTASP) was formed in September of 2017 by five members of the Santa Rosa community to provide a focal point for community fund-raising efforts to support the health and maintenance of Trione-Annadel State Park.

Less than one month later, the Nunns fire swept through the park, creating an even more urgent need for trail and environmental work in the park.

Learn about their mission, current projects, future projects and the long-term vision for the park.

Meeting Called to Order by President Tony

  1. Pledge of Allegiance: Jose Guillen
  2. Reflection: Ted Wilmsen gave an inspiring talk about a Black Dot. Students were given an examination in which there was only a black dot in the middle of the page and they were asked to describe it.  Everyone focused on the black dot, and ignored the white space around it.  Just like in life, we focus too much on the darkness.

Introduction of Visiting Rotarians and Guests: No visiting Rotarians, per Rio Ray.  Former Rotarian Lena Humber joined us.  Diane Moresi introduced Matt Everson, who brought our speaker for the day.

Sunshine Report

Ginny Cannon told us that everything is sunny in the Rotary world.  Tim Fawcett is visiting his mom in Virginia.

Raffle:

Dan Balfe announced a pot of ½ of $54.  Kim Graves had the winning ticket, but could not find the right marble.

Joke of the Day: Cathy Vicini did a Catholic joke about Adam’s underwear.

President Tony welcomed back Jack Atkin.

Rotarian Dan Balfe holds the raffle bucket and Ginny Cannon pulls the lucky number  Rotarian Dan Balfe holds the raffle bucket and Ginny Cannon pulls the lucky number  Ginny can’t read the number so Debi Zaft calls out the number.  Kim Graves has the winning number, but not the “big” pot of $27!

Announcements:

Vicki Hardcastle reminded us that PDG Bob Rogers is again doing the Pedal for Polio this year.  Buy a End Polio Now bracelet for $100 and help end Polio!  Also, October 28th is the Foundation brunch; costs $50.  What a deal with the free mimosas!

Foundation and Membership Training, Saturday, October 27, Finley Center

Yale Abrams announced the annual hands on event at the Laguna on October 6th, 8:30 to noon, a very busy day.  Sign up!

Gran Fondo rest stop is at the same time, only earlier.  Be there on October 6th by sun-up.

Casey D’Angelo talked about the start of New Gen Peacebuilders last weekend.  We had 23 students from 10 HS.  December 15th will be the celebration, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Doug Johnson has enough people for the Gran Fondo, but if you’re tempted to jump ship, let him know.

Thursday, November 8th, will be the annual Vets celebration at the Vets Building.  Buy a ticket for yourself and a vet.  Tickets will go on sale next week.

Recognitions:Guest speaker, Susan Ferron

John Poremba went to the 64th Annual Rotary Club of St. Andrews golf tournament in Scotland.  He had great fun with Rotarians from around the world and showed us pictures of his trip.  He apparently got so high he donated $100 to the Foundation!

Santa Rosa East is doing a project putting together prosthetic arms.  Same project that was done at the District Conference last May.  It takes about 45 minutes to put one together, and they’re asking each team of two to put together two arms.  President Tony showed us a short video of the things people can do with their prosthetic arms: hold a  utensil to eat, hold a pen to write, ride a motor scooter, really anything. The arms are simple and uncomplicated and make a huge difference in the lives of 3rd world people.  The event is also October 6th.  RSVP to Marilyn Lira of the East Club.

Program:

Guest speaker, Susan FerronMatt Everson introduced our speaker, Susan Farren, who was one of Matt’s assistant coaches in Little League, and actually saved a 8 year old child during a game when he was hit in the chest by a pitch.  Susan has been a paramedic for 33 years, having started in Kindergarten.

Susan Farren, First Responders Resiliency, Inc., gave a wonderful talk about first responders and the stress they go through with their jobs.  Some horrible statistics: 80% divorce rate, 90% alcohol addiction rate, 15 years less on life expectancy, and the #1 cause of death for 1st responders is suicide.

Susan told us her own personal journey of discovering her husband’s affair and then going through difficult health issues, all of which led to her investigating the health effects of being a 1st responder, and deciding to do something about it.

Susan wants to build a Resiliency Center in Santa Rosa to keep first responders from getting PTSD before it hits them.

Guest speaker, Susan FerronPresident Tony thanked members who participated:

  1. Pledge: Jose Guillen
  2. Reflection: Ted Wilmsen
  3. Greeters: Matthew Henry & Steve Olson
  4. Raffle: Dan Balfe
  5. Lunch Check-in: Cecil Humes
  6. Lunch Tickets: Diane Moresi
  7. Visiting Rotarians: Rio Ray

A Message From Past District Governor Bob Rogers

Rotary…Where Dreams Take Flight.” Hello District 5130 Rotarians…Past District Governor Bob Rogers here following up on the “Ideation” process begun at our District Conference this past May. We promised to get you all the ideas that came from those incredible sessions. We hope these will become “sparks” toward new efforts and initiatives to address these club, community and beyond issues. Our plan is to issue them at the rate of two per month. With this email, we are starting the process with the first two, Educating Children to be Better Citizens and Attracting New Members for Clubs, by including them as attachments. I think you’ll find plenty of new ideas for both challenges in these documents, particularly for your youth related Committees and your Membership Committee members.

Some history for those who could not attend. We sent out a survey to all Rotarians last December, where we took your responses and picked the top 8 challenges we, as Rotarians, should focus on at the District Conference’s brainstorming “Ideation” Sessions.

Here they are in their order of ranking and the dates we’re “releasing” the results in the months ahead (Please note: All of the results will be posted on the Rotary5130.org website).

September:

1. Educating children to be better citizens

2. Attracting new members for clubs

October:

3. Rotary’s relevance in the future

4. Access to education in the developing world

November:

5. Disaster preparedness and response

6. Homelessness

December:

7. Developing and sustaining vibrant communities

8. Female rights in the developing world

These Conference Theme quotes above are what the Conference was all about. Rotarians, In-bound and Out-bound Youth Exchange Students, Rotaractors, and Rotex Members all collaborated together in this process. Join in, take these ideas and make them fly!

Yours in Rotary,

Bob
