AFGHANISTAN: BUILD A SCHOOL

rrh-foundationWhat Tomorrow Brings –
Award winning filmmaker Beth Murphy and a CNN’s 2012 Hero of the Year Razia Jan will be sharing with Rotarians a story of educating young women in rural Afghanistan. Razia, a Rotarian herself, left a comfortable life in the US to return to Afghanistan in 2008 and found the first girls only school in rural Afghanistan. Today over 480 girls attend. Her new project is the first women’s only college in the same village. Construction is already underway!

OPENING CEREMONIES

Presiding: President Doug asked Ryan Thomas to lead us in the pledge, which he skillfully executed. Kerrie Chambers then gave a tearful, heartfelt thanks to Rotary for “saving her son’s life”. She meant this quite literally as he was due to be “not asked back” to Cardinal Newman for his senior year. Devastated about the news, Kerrie asked a fellow Rotarian Dennis Crandall for his help and through his efforts was able to get her son back into CN for his senior year. She related a similar story of another’s son who was not so fortunate and ended up committing suicide. Kerrie gave some statistics about teen suicide and awareness.

VISITING ROTARIANS

Dan Erickson, Healdsburg Sunrise, financial consultant.

GUESTS OF ROTARIANS

Jane Costello was a guest today of Dan Erickson, a former member of our club who is now a member of the Healdsburg club. Word has it that Jane is taking over Dan’s Edward Jones business as he eases into retirement. Kim Graves had her husband in tow today, John Graves. I believe I also saw Elaine Olson in the room today Welcome, guests!

RAFFLE

The Raffle was led by Steve (Deadhead) Marburger. Blaine Goodwin had the ticket, but as Dr. John once sang, “I had the right ticket but it must have been the wrong drawing!”

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Cathy Vicini must have something against blondes as she seems to pick on them with her jokes. Here is the Cliff Notes version: A blonde who was sick and tired of blonde jokes wanted to show her husband that blondes really are smart. She decided that she would paint a couple of rooms in the house while her husband was at work. He returned from work to find his wife lying on the floor in a pool of sweat wearing a ski jacket and a fur coat at the same time. The distinctive smell of paint was in the air. He asked why she was wearing two coats. She replied that she was following the directions on the can that said, “For best results, put on two coats.”

PROGRAM

Keven Brown introduced today’s speaker, artist Sally Baker who told us about Art Trails. Sonoma County Art Trails is a juried artist open house that takes place over two weekends, October 10th & 11th and October 17th & 18th. On those two weekends artists from around the county will welcome art lovers into their home studios to view and purchase fine artwork directly from the artist. These artists are professionals and their work is on par with the best from around the country. In fact, because of it’s physical beauty, many of the best landscape artists call Sonoma County home.

Sally shared a couple of her pieces and explained how curves can be used to draw a person’s eye from an “entry point” to other parts of the painting. She also explained her ideas about composition and form and techniques as a still life artist.

Sally also discussed the use of giclee’ in making art affordable for those who can’t spend the money for original paintings. Giclee is a high quality digital ink jet printing process that can accurately reproduce an original painting and will last many years. Other processes do not stand the test of time and may fade quickly. The giclee’ process also allows for printing onto the same surface as the original painting.

Finally, Sally related a story how a doctor asked for a discount. She asked the doctor what he did for a living. When he told her he is a surgeon, she asked if he gives discounts for his surgery services. For some curious reason, while people love art and music, they don’t seem to feel they should have to pay for it. Perhaps because they don’t feel it’s a necessity or is frivolous? Hardly! Can you imagine a world without the arts?
