His lifelong mission has been and continues to be to integrate health, wellness and holistic nutrition and therapeutic cooking with conventional medicine and community health care.

Ed Bauman - Eating For HealthIt was he who coined the phrase Holistic Medicine in 1976 and put it into practice at the Berkeley Holistic Health Center, one of the first successful integrative health clinics in the United States.

Cathy’s Weekly Joke:

Two wives go out for girl’s night. Both got drunk, started walking home and had to pee. They stopped at a cemetery but had nothing to wipe with. One used her panties the other grabbed a wreath off a grave. The next morning one husband called the other and said, “No more girl’s night out! My wife came back with no panties.” the other husband said “you think that’s bad? Mine came back with a card in her crack that read “From all of us at the fire station- we’ll never forget you.”

Peter Holewinski said there was $126 in the pot with 5 marbles remaining.  Sam McMillan’s number was pulled but he had to settle for the $10.00 consolation prize.

Jeanne Levin said that she saw on Facebook that former member Vinay Patel was asking for birthday donations for our club!

Smile.amazon.com

If you don’t already know about this, here is the scoop.  If you log into Amazon at www.https://smile.amazon.com you can set it up so that our club gets a donation from Amazon every time you make a purchase.  It is not a lot of money, but if the whole club signs up and uses this site to log into Amazon those pennies add up.  It costs you nothing!

Guest Speaker, Sheriff Rob Giordano

Where to start!  First of all Marnie Goldschlag announced that the public service awards in January will now include the county sheriff’s department.  Three awards!

Misty Harris has been hired as the community engagement liaison person so that there is more visibility.  The department is very active on social media.

“Why did God invent deputy sheriffs?  So the fire fighters would have someone to look up to.”  He’s going to give Cathy Vicini a run for her money! He swears that they have more Facebook followers than The Press Democrat.

Crime is up a bit due to less people in our prisons and more in our jails.  Our local jail should be only holding people for up to one year; now they have some who may be there up to 12 years.

Their job is to protect lives and property from people, but much more is asked of them now and has become a tricky balance. 40% of the people in jail have mental health issues, hence the new jail that is being built.

Marijuana/cannabis is the new and most visible issue.  95% of county homicides have to do with marijuana.  In the future cannabis issues will be handled by PRMD.  They will be enforcing the marijuana laws.

Since legalization of marijuana in Colorado, many unsuspected issue have arisen.  More marijuana is going into Mexico than is coming out.  There will still be lots of illegal growing until the whole nation legalizes marijuana.  It is now stronger and there are more issues with poisoning and overdoses.  There are more dispensaries in Colorado than there are Starbucks or McDonalds.  Fatal accidents are way up in Colorado.

Heavy users will find it says in their system for 30 days or more.  How do you determine when it is impairment or not?

Lots of jobs available with the sheriff’s department, but getting qualified candidates is a problem.

Do they or don’t they cooperate with ICE? Yes and no.  Sheriffs do not ask if a person is here illegally.  If they have been arrested before, that can trigger ICE.  The fingerprints go into the data base where ICE can find them.  They stopped honoring ICE requests for holds 3 years ago.
