Our Program For September 13, 2017

DISTRICT GOVENOR 2017 – 2018

Bob Rogers

District Governor - Bob Rogers - 2017-2018

District Governor Bob Rogers will be our special guest on September 13th.  Our own club member Marnie Goldschlag, AG for D5130, will serve as his host and make the introduction. Some of us may know him already as former President of the Rotary Club of Sebastopol.  This official visit will give him a chance to meet every Club member.  In his words, “I’ll share goals for the year, District and RI news, and if all goes as planned, inspire and motivate your club members and maybe…even be entertaining. Of course, all members are encouraged to attend, and spouses and visitors are also welcome.”

Let’s all give him a warm welcome and hear how we can be a part of “Making a Difference!”

Opening Ceremonies:

Ray Giampaoli led us in reciting the Pledge of allegiance and Kris Anderson gave us the weekly Reflection… It was a blessing that Sheldon Cooper and his mom said on the episode, “The Electric Can Opener Fluctuation” of the Big Bang Theory.  “By His hand we are fed. Give us our daily bread.  Please know that we are truly grateful for every cup and every plateful.  Amen”

Guests of Members:

Tammy Fannin was a guest of Matt Fannin (but no relation) and Rose Frances, first lady of our club.

Calendar of Events:

09/09/2017: Be at the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation, 600 Stanford Road, for a work day at 9:00 am.  There will be gardening, painting and other projects to do.  We should be done by 3:00.  Lunch will be provided.

09/11/2017:  The four local Rotary clubs will be having a joint social with District Governor, Bob Rogers, at the St Rose School.  If you are coming, bring some wine.  5:30 to 7:00

09/21/2017:  A Rotary social to see the play “Sideways” at Left Edge Theatre.  Tickets are $40.00 and we have bought out the entire performance.  See Cecil Humes to get your tickets.  This is based on the book by the same name that was made into a movie a few years back.

09/28/2017:   The monthly SCARC meeting.  This one is on Streamlining the Grant Writing Process, but all members involved with membership should go as the Sonoma Valley Club has grown a lot in the past few years.  See President Julia for details if you wish to go.  It will be in Sonoma at the General’s Daughter

09/29/2017:  Social at the Living Room 5:30 to 7:00.  See Andrea Geary to sign up.  The cost is $10.00 and if you are going please bring a side dish or dessert.

09/30/2017:  Grand Fondo day!  Be out at the Monte Rio rest stop at 7:00 am to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cut up fruit, mix up energy drinks and a bunch of other small tasks.  We will be done and packed up by 11:30 at the latest.

Sunshine Report:

A very sad week for our club.  Schuyler Jeffries died from a heart attack this last week.  Schuyler was never a president of our club, but he was a leader in the Santa Rosa community, including Mayor of Santa Rosa.  Another former member, Rick Horner, also just passed away.  He was our Rotarian of the Year in 1989 and a good friend of Jack Tolin.

Raffle:

Someone was asleep at the wheel!  A number was called and no one responded.  So Bob Bratberg had another number pulled and it belonged to Doug Johnson.  Alas he did not win the pot of $73.00.

Video – “Let’s Drop to Zero.”   President Julia played the newest Polio Plus video for us.  Quite a cast of world leaders in this video making their plea to end polio now.

Joke of the Week:

Why does New Jersey have the most toxic waste dumps and California the most attorneys?  New Jersey got to pick first!

Website Update:

Our website is out of date.  President Julia is asking everyone to take a look at it.  If you can provide content to get it updated…..PLEASE get it to her.  She wants photos and articles on our projects that are current.

Announcements:

Matthew Henry is looking for volunteers to work at the YMCA golf tournament.

Rich de Lambert pointed out the forms on the table to fill out for potential new members….and don’t forget to wear your pin!

Ann Gospe wants to make sure the club knows who is a veteran of any branch of military service.  So please let her know if you have served.

Debi Zaft says the new roster is now at the printer!

President Julia has contact information to make donations to Rotarians affected by Hurricane Harvey.  Stay tuned for Hurricane Irma…………

Recognitions:

Tony Roehrick is a grandfather for the 4th time

Bill Hatcher was recognized by the Press Democrat as the best attorney in Sonoma County.  He does not know who nominated him, but he is thankful.

Tim Delaney did fly to Oregon to see the eclipse.  Now, how he flew the plane and wore those glasses at the same time is kind of scary!  LOL!

Guest Speaker:  Pivot to Success – AJ MacQuarrie

AJ has been an entrepreneur since he was a little kid.  He started selling stuff from his parent’s basement.  He is the founder of a company called Karma Box which is a vending machine that has both snacks and drinks leaning to the healthy side.  Here are his main points to being an entrepreneur and being successful:

  1. It is a skill set and a mind set
  2. You need to embrace the roller coaster
  3. Don’t let your dream die
  4. Find your driving force
  5. Keep calm and roll with the punches
  6. Give up on what’s holding you back
  7. Pivot when necessary
  8. Make risk taking a habit
  9. Be delusionally optimistic
  10. Fake it until you make it
