Special Bulletin

Due to unusual circumstance we do not have a written bulletin this week.  However, we did have two very timely presentations.

Raffle

Program One

First presentation was by club member Richard Lazovick, talking about Hints For Preparing For a Power Outage.  He talked about using solar power with and without a battery backup, things to consider when getting a generator, using your CPAP without a generator, and staying connected.

Program Two

Dr Nancy Brown talked about what is going on with the newly formed Department of Emergency Management, and detailed the current plans for community preparedness.

Why The Event – Our Veterans Program

The City of Santa Rosa had never had a celebration event recognizing those who have served in the armed forces. There were no public plaques, monuments or programs which said “thank you,”

In August 2000, City Council member and Rotarian, Bob Blanchard, approached Tom Croft and Jim Wieschendorff about helping the city to recognize the men and women who have put their lives on the line for our country. At that time, Bob recommended a format whereby Rotary and Kiwanis clubs join efforts to have some form of recognition of our veterans.

Thus the committee was formed consisting of at least one member from each of the 9 service clubs for the purpose of a celebratory lunch which served our community of veterans. The idea was for each club member to purchase 2 tickets, one for the member and one for a veteran. This event lives today because Rotary and Kiwanis have taken the leadership in the community to offer a quality program for our veterans of all theaters of action and regardless of service organization.

Included have been men and women representing the Navy, WAVES, Army, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, Rosie the Riveters, All who have served home and abroad. Despite seemingly polarizing issues of the time, one thing holds true. Because of the brave service members of the past, our country continues to hold values stemming from rich thinking and remains the envy of the world. Let us never forget those who have protected those values in each service.

Thanks to Rotary and Kiwanis, this event is a tribute and service to our community and some very strong

principles and people.
