100 Black Men of Sonoma County
Jerry Morat and Arthur Chaney
Jerry Morat and Arthur Chaney will be presenting a program about the organization called 100 Black Men. In the first half CPA Jerry Morat will tell about his father who was a Tuskegee airman in WWII and where their legacy is today. The second part will be presented by Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotarian Arthur Chaney who will tell about 100 Black Men of Sonoma County which is very much like Rotary in their service to the community. Their recent July 16 golf tournament, attended by some of our own Rotarians, provided local scholarships, mentoring and financial tutoring to needy students.

All meetings are in-person and online meetings. In-person meetings will be located at the Epicenter Sports Center located at 3215 Coffey Lane, Santa Rosa, CA. Use the first door, closest to Piner Road. There will be greeters at the door to guide you.

Sept 18th:
The next social will be next month on Saturday, September 18th at the Gospe’s house. This time it will be a family pool party. Please bring the kids and grandkids. We will also be having our meat auction from the lambs and pigs that were bought at the Sonoma County Fair. More details to come.

Opening Ceremonies:
After President Ray greeted us, Pete Lescure led in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four Way Test. His reflection started with this year’s “Serve to Change Lives.” Maybe we have it bad, but not as bad as it in in Haiti this week. Serve to change lives by donating a few bucks to help the people in Haiti.

Sunshine Report:
Not so sunny this week. Our beloved friend, Jack Abercrombie, passed away on Monday. Jack was a member of our club since 1991. He spent 11 years as our secretary. We send our condolences to his wife Pris. He will be missed. Rich de Lambert’s son is in ICU in Oregon for Covid for the last 10 days. (Update! He is off the ventilator and eating) Please keep the de Lambert family in your prayers. Former member Matt Everson’s son had a skateboarding accident and is in serious condition. District Governor Dustin Littlefield has contracted Covid but is in pretty good shape. More tired than anything else. Amel, the Afghani interpreter that visited our club a couple of times is safe in Reno with his wife and daughter, but they are trying to get his mom, sister and wife’s family out of Afghanistan.
Raffle:
Four marbles and $110 in the pot. Ted (of course) Wilmsen had his number pulled but he did not win. The pot rolls over!

District Grant Status:
WE GOT IT! Dan Balfe sent out an e-mail Saturday afternoon to let us know. We will be helping Pepperwood Preserve plan some native grasses in the future.
Calendar of Events:
September 18: Family social at the Gospe’s and the lamb and pork auction. Bring the kids and grandkids to use the pool (you too) and your checkbook.
September 25: Giro d’Wine Country is fast approaching! It is all hands-on deck to make this a successful event. The Sign-Up Genius will be out shortly. Everyone needs to help, and we will have fun doing it!
October 8-9: District Conference
December 3: 100th Birthday party for our club. Tickets still available for $125.00 per person or $150.00 for the tables of eight.
Recognitions:
Casey and Pam D’Angelo spent 3 weeks in England. They visited his son and family and a daughter too. He donated $50 to the club and $50 to the bike ride.
Announcements:
Steve Olson says that the Larry Miyano Engineering Scholarship is $42,500. This scholarship is for a junior college student who is transferring to a 4-year college. The goal is to get the fund to $50,000 so that it can support a $2000 scholarship each year. Another solicitation will be going out to friends, business associates, etc to get to that $50,000 level in the near future. Michael Moore and Tim Delaney have been major donors.
Dan Balfe says the World Community Service is looking to fund Shelter Box. Shelter Box is an organization, started by a Rotarian, that sends their boxes out to areas in the world where there have been natural disasters to help provide emergency shelter. Many Rotarians have been donating to this organization for years.
Steve Baime gave us some upcoming dates for various ESRAG projects.
President Ray climbed Mt Bachelor this past weekend to practice for his Mt Shasta climb at the end of the month. He is doing a Climb for Polio. Kris Anderson is doing Jazzercise for Polio, and Ryan Thomas is doing 100 holes of golf.
Julia Parranto had an interesting memory of Jack Abercrombie that she shared with us. Before she joined Rotary, she had sued John Abercrombie for a client. Yes, that was our Jack.
Today’s guest speaker was Tony Passantino, the lead educator for the Sonoma Ecology Center.
The Sonoma Ecology Center was started in 1990. Their mission is to work with the Sonoma Valley to identify and lead actions that achieve and sustain the health of the Sonoma Valley. They are community members with expertise in science, resource management, education, planning, construction, policy and business. Their values: support biodiversity, use the best science available, share what they learn, encourage stewardship, foster collaboration and lead by example. How do you go carbon negative? They work with vineyards to burn the vines that are removed and then putting the ash back into the soil. they have worked with Credo High School to develop student leaders. They have led teams at Sugarloaf Park to restore the damage from the 2017 and 2020 fires. They manage several gardens in the Somona area. The fires have destroyed animal habitat. that is why we are seeing them more in our habitat. We are in a ten-year drought. the difference this time is that it has been much hotter so more evaporation. The winds are worse too. Should we remove all the dead trees? Tony says no. Dead trees are important to the ecosystem.

The Rotary Club Board of Director’s has approved Randy Hartt’s application for membership. Randy is transferring from the Rotary Club of Fairfield/Suisun. He is the new Corps Commanding Officer with the Salvation Army. Please welcome Randy when you see him.
