Opening Ceremonies:

Today we had President Elect Casey D’Angelo at the podium to lead his first Rotary meeting, President Ann sat in the back and enjoyed the day!  Past President Kris Anderson led us in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, the Four- Way Test and the Reflection on Leadership:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful concerned citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”  Margaret Mead

“The single biggest way to impact an organization is to focus on leadership development. There is almost no limit to the potential of an organization that recruits good people, raises them up to be leaders, and continuously develops them” John Maxwell.

Visiting Rotarians:

was visiting from Lusaka, Zambia.  Brenda is a dental surgeon in Zambia.  Our member, Jim Green met her many years ago in Zambia and he paid for her to go to dental school!  They have been friends ever since.  Brenda is a member of the Rotary Club of Lusaka.

Visitors:

Jennifer Sedra, Isidora Sarria, Brownyn Gunderson, Mel Konrad, Rafike Aldo, Lillia Castelin, Bill Hatcher, Sr., Humberto Ibarra.  Wow!

Sunshine Report:

Fred Levin is back! He still has some healing to do, but it was really good to have him back. On a sad note, former member Chuck Bartley’s daughter just passed away. Our condolences to the family.

Raffle:

Controversy! There were 8 marbles today. Hummmm…. should that be seven? Oh, who cares.  The pot was $71.00, and President Elect Casey had the lucky number.  However, he pulled a yellow marble. More money for next week!

District Assembly Recap:

14 people and 3 Rotoractors went to District Assembly this past Saturday.  We may have had the largest group there!  It was very fun and very educational.  Remember it is always the first Saturday in April.  See you there next year.

Why Deliveries:

The books are going out to the schools.  So far everyone loves them and thinks they will be more useful than the dictionaries, Former member, Jose Guillen went out with Mary Graves to help (hopefully he will be back soon). President Ann reminded all to take pictures when you deliver.

Giro Bello:

Past President Ray Giampaoli reminded us that we need to find one sponsor, so we have the money to support our charitable goals.

The Next SCARC Meeting:

The next Sonoma County Area Rotary Club meeting is April 25th at the Wild Oak Saddle Club. The Rotary Club of Valley of the Moon is this month’s host. The guest speaker is Dana Christian Lee from “Tell Mt Story”.  She is the director of programing and development.  She will be talking about children’s mental and suicide rates.  We will be sitting outside, so bring a sweater.  The deadline for making a reservation is Sunday April 21.  Email Valerie Hulsey to make a reservation: valerie.hulsey@yahoo.com.

Greeter/Raffle:

Robert Pierce passed around a clipboard to get signups for being a greeter and/or raffle.  If you did not get the board to sign up, see him next week.

A New Foundation Scholarship: The Norm and Bev Legal Scholarship and Four-Way Test Scholarship

Mary Graves and her husband have given initial funding to this new scholarship to honor our former member, Past President and Past District Governor Norm Owen and his wife Beverly. It is for the students going into the legal field such as legal secretary, legal aide, pre-law or law school.

Norm joined our club in 1978. He led the way to build the Rotary Student Leadership Room at the Santa Rosa Junior College.  It took 10 years and $100,000 to get it done.  Mary joined our club in 1993 and Norm was the mentor for the Red Badgers. He really got new members to understand what the Four-Way Test means to Rotarians and why it is important. In 2001 Norm was elected to be District Governor and developed cancer about the time his year as District Governor started. Eight people came together to drive him about District 5130 to visit all the clubs that year.  The significance of the Four-Way Test was important to Norm, and he never failed to use the Four-Way Test to make decisions and solve problems as they arose. Norm and Bev are retired and live in Oakmont.

Foundation Board Members:

Sam McMillan announced who was going to be serving on the Foundation board starting in July.  Nona Lucas, Steve Olson, Chuck Wear and Doug Chase have been appointed for 3-year terms. Paul Hamilton will be president. Bill Hatcher will be serving as vice president and corresponding secretary. Cecil Humes will serve as treasurer. Jeanne Levin the recording secretary.

Steve Marburger on Cyber Security

Steve owned Jemez Computer Consulting Group in Santa Fe, New Mexico from 1995- 2014. He moved to Santa Rosa in 2014 and promptly joined our club. He opened Pipeline Information Technologies. It is an IT group with emphasis on computer networks, security, cloud-based systems and wireless technologies.  Today’s topic was on Cyber security.

AT&T was recently breached affecting 73 million customers. Their information has been sold to the “dark web.”   There are several types of attacks: ransomware, malware, spyware, viruses, infective websites, phishing and spoofing. Steve gave us examples of each type. He gave us pointers on how to protect ourselves.  Look out for attachments, downloads, and links.  Look at the sender’s email address.  Create strong passwords using at least 8 characters that include capital letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Use multifactor authentication whenever possible.  Both Microsoft and Google have these apps.  Use secure internet connections. Update your anti-virus software regularly. Never text or email your passwords.  Use an agency that offers ID protection.

Update the operating system on your computer.  Install all security updates as you get them. Passwords protect your computer, use multi factor authentication, install antivirus software and back up your data.  As for your cellphone, the same thing as your computer.

Back up everything.  He suggested cloud-based systems like Carbonite and CrashPlan.  Get an external hard drive.  He then gave us three case studies.  In all cases it takes months to be made whole and it costs a lot of money.

If you get hacked: Change your passwords for all exposed accounts. Have a forensic audit done on your computer.
Go to IdentityTheft.gov. Monitor your data with ID shield. Watch out for suspicious phone calls, email and/or texts.  Contact Steve if you have any questions.
