30 Project Documentary

Chris Kam

Chris Kam is a 20 year-old documentary filmmaker and photographer based in Sonoma County, CA. Over the years, he has produced work featuring F-35 fighter pilot Hasard Lee, YouTube personalities Kara and Nate, author Ryan Holiday, and former I.S.S. Commander Terry Virts.

His newest film, “The 30 Project” documents his struggle for normalcy after developing severe panic disorder the summer before his freshman year of film school. The film premiered to a sold out crowd of 200+ and was featured on the front page of The Press Democrat, as well as in The Washington Post. Join Chris for a screening of the movie followed by a Q&A.

July 13 – Re-scheduled July Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at 3 PM. President Ann reminded everyone that the Board meeting is open to all club members. It is an opportunity for Blue Badgers to complete a requirement.

Opening

Heather Thurber led today’s opening ceremonies. The reflection was provided by President Ann Gospe and read by Heather.

Carl Sagan wrote, “Who are we, if not measured by our impact on others? That’s who we are! We’re not who we say we are, we’re not who we want to be – we are the sum of the influence and impact that we have, in our lives, on others.”

Jim Green recently moved to Santa Rosa from Grants Pass, Oregon. He has applied for membership in the club.

Odalis Medianero introduced Judith Waldman, Director of the Jewish Community Free Clinic.

Sunshine

Ginny Cannon shared that Kim Murphy and her husband are improving after having COVID.

Raffle

Matthew Henry conducted the raffle today. A new member, Doug Landin, did not win but received a $10 consolation prize which he immediately placed in the Polio Plus bucket.

Announcements

Rick Allen announced that the 100 Black Men’s 2023 Golf Tournament Charity Fundraiser will be held Friday, July 28, 2023, at Windsor Golf Club. You do not have to play golf to attend.

Charles Howard-Gibbon announced that the monthly “Rotarians at Work” evening at the Redwood Empire Food Bank is tonight, July 12, at 5 PM.

Social

Secretary Debi Zaft announced that there would be a Rotary Social at the “Iron and Vine” bar on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at 4 PM.

More Announcements

The first SCARC meeting of President Ann Gospe’s term will be held on July 27, 2023, at Balletto Winery. Please RSVP to Debi immediately, as this is a popular event and fills up fast. The cost is $50.

The Rotary Magazine Quiz will begin again at the next meeting. Debi will ask a question from an article in the current issue. The name of the person who answers the question correctly will go into the “pot.” At the end of the year, a random drawing will determine who wins $100.

Robert Pierce announced that there would be a post-Giro Bello meeting of the committee chairs today, July 12, at 3:45 PM at the YMCA.

President Ann Gospe

President Ann encouraged everyone to mark their calendar for August 9th, when District Governor Tom Boylan will attend our meeting. He will also attend the “Rotary at Work” evening with us at the Redwood Empire Food Bank.

The re-scheduled July Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at 3 PM. President Ann reminded everyone that the Board meeting is open to all club members. It is an opportunity for Blue Badgers to complete a requirement.

Past Presidents Ray Giampoli and Kris Anderson participated in the Pepperwood Preserve rye seed planting last Saturday. Pepperwood provides refreshments and lunch for the work party. If you are interested in participating, go to https://www.pepperwoodpreserve.org/ to sign up. President Ann reminded everyone that we have given generously to the restoration project at Pepperwood Preserve. She would like to see us provide both funds and hands-on support for the project we are helping to fund.

Dues

The club is moving to quarterly dues that can be paid online. If you pre-register online, the cost for lunch is $30. If you pay at the meeting, the cost is $33. The option for a beverage/meeting is still $10. An email will be sent out with details.

Rotary Craft Talk

Former member and now Blue Badge member Fred Levin gave his craft talk, a requirement for becoming a full member of the club AGAIN. Fred originally joined Rotary in 2001 and was president of our club from 2009-2010. He closed his remarks by saying how much he valued Rotary and our club members.

Recognition

President Ann called out her husband and club photographer for recognition. Jeff, who had just recently returned from traveling extensively with their son Jacob missed President Ann’s first Rotary Club meeting as president. Jeff lavished gifts from his travels upon Ann in an attempt to make up for not attending. In addition, in a continuing effort to make amends, he generously donated to the club, the foundation, and polio.

Program

Odalis Medianero introduced the Director of the Jewish Community Free Clinic, Judith Waldman. Following her presentation, she invited those in attendance to email her if they would like a tour of the facility to see the first-hand work that they do. She also encouraged those wanting to volunteer at the clinic to contact her.

Next Meeting

President Ann is excited about next week’s meeting when Chris Kam, a young local filmmaker, will attend. He will show his short film on his mental health journey and how he navigated his struggles through his film project.
